So, why is it that a router starts acting up and the firmware needs to be updated to make it work again?

I just don't get it. It works for a year and then suddenly it craps out and I am told I need a firmware update.
WHAT!!! 😕
Is the old firmware worn out? Does it degrade over time?

one of those mysteries of the universe.

You know how many times I have to try to explain to people just like you to reboot/reload the router to fix their busted crap.

It gets old. 🙁

In many cases their may be traffic which the unit has problems with (common with malicious traffic). That traffic may not have been common a year ago, but your seeing it more in the wild now, as such you start seeing your previously stable box start 'crapping out' more and more.

And, as was posted, this is really the wrong forum. It's annoying since you clearly know better 😉

On firmware, I dont know. Some firmware revisions dont support, or support poorly, the signalling protocol being used. But thats not an instance of running for years and then just suddenly breaking.
But routers, like every other peice of equipment out there, can and do hang. They just....stop. Just like how Windows will just suddenly....stop. And you need to reboot it. Problem is, everyone and their dog seems to think Cisco routers are Gods gift to signalling and never suspect it could be their cheap ass rinky dink Cisco thats the problem.

My Internet provider installed a Linksys ethernet card on my computer when I was first getting cable Internet. Every time I booted up my computer found new hardware. Basically I had to reinstall the card and reboot to get it it to work every time I wanted to use the Internet. I finally took the card back to them and got them to give me another brand (Netgear). Worked and have never had another problem.

Well I design software to some extent and I realize things can 'hang' but that usually means it doesn't work at all. The router however works.... kind of.
Ohh, and since when is ranting forbidden in OT?
