It's been a while since I've posted a technician rant, but here goes...

This guy calls up:

Me: Hello, etc, etc, etc...
Him: Yeah, I've got a laserjet 4050 that's not printing what I want it to
Me: What exactly is it doing?
Him: Well, when I specify how many copies to print it seems to freeze at that point (seems to be describing something in the printer control panel)
Me: OK, can you walk me through exactly what you're trying to do?
Him: Well, it's not here.
Me: What's not there?
Him: My computer.
Me: Your PC's not there?
Him: It's in for repair.
Me: (incredulous) OK, you do understand that to troubleshoot printing problems we really do need both the printer and a PC, right? I can run you through basic printer troubleshooting, reset the memory, make sure it's capable of printing a configuration page, etc. but as far as it's ability to receive data we would need to have something to send the data to it.
Him: OK, that's fine.
Me: OK, if you're at the printer use the menu key once to the right...
Him: I can't, the printer isn't here.
Me: I thought the PC wasn't there?
Him: They're both not here, the printer is at my friend's house. I can go there, if you can call me there in 20 minutes.
Me: Duh...

Some people make me really wonder what they were thinking when they called us. Especially since it was a long distance call for him.

I honestly believe that's the case most of the time. What I love is when they have to tell you thier life story before getting to the flipping point.

"So I came in this morning and tried to print something and that went ok and then I went to lunch and came back and did some work and took a few calls and then went to print and it printed ok but when I tried to print again I was out of paper.... is that normal?"

OK so that's an exaggeration but you get the point.

Maybe he was just calling in for some pointers to try when he gets his stuff together?

Nik (just took his first call of the day and it went very smoothly)

Trying to ask how to remove a screen saver:

Customer: "I just go to My Computer and delete everything, right?"

LoL! GOtta love that site...
sorta like a question my friend asked me before...

"Whats better? A PC or Windows?"
