Can't touch him now. Had he done it when he came in that would be one thing. Now Comey is pretty much untouchable until this whole matter is closed.

Horrible optics. Even for someone as stupid as Trump. If he thought the IC was against him now, it be orders of magnitude worse if he fired Comey for anything less than severe violation of his position. Think "dead girl or live boy" type of scenario, at a minimum.

Because it wouldn't serve his interests.

Yep. Trump eliminating Comey at this point would lead to endless investigations of every aspect of the Administration. Trump couldn't fart without someone making a stink, so to speak.

Yep. I'm guessing that Comey has some sort of dead man switch built in with very loyal members of the IC. Dumping him will kick the leaks into overdrive.

This might be amusing for some. Spicer's comments after Comey's statement.

"The White House stood its ground Monday after FBI Director James Comey confirmed the bureau is probing possible “links” between the Russian government and Trump campaign associates, and knocked down President Trump’s claim that his predecessor wiretapped him.

Press Secretary Sean Spicer, in response, maintained there’s “no evidence” of collusion with Russia – and said Trump is not withdrawing his allegation against former President Barack Obama, either."

Bloody awesome mate.

These guys are like political scab pickers. They can't just let something go. They just have to keep picking, picking and picking and never let the damn thing heal.

Untouchable by Trump. Maybe Russia could dig up some dirt on him and pass it to WikiLeaks, but that could cause more problems than it solves.

Pretty much this.

However, I disagree that Trump could have more easily fired Comey when he first came in. IIRC the FBI director position is an appointment for a set period of time (8 yrs?) and you don't fire them without good reason before that term expires. Comey's firing was discussed back during the Hillary email thingy and the difficulty in doing so was noted back then.

Consider at the time. GOP hated him for not indicting Clinton. Dems hated him for the letter he sent about the new emails that were inconsequential.

I doubt anyone would have made a fuss. Both sides were calling for him to step down.

  1. Yes, the President can fire Comey for pretty much any reason. This would likely not work out well for him.
  2. The House could in fact impeach Trump for said firing. If I'm not mistaken, the House is the sole body that defines what "high crimes and misdemeanors" actually are.
  3. IF Trump did fire Comey for the investigation it wouldn't be as simple as appointing a crony who would stop the investigation. Trump could try that but the FBI Director must be approved by the Senate.

Regarding point number 2, Nunes and crew were trying to implicate Comey in leaks to the press. They clearly want to both stifle the Russia investigation and give Trump a reason to fire Comey without prompting as big an outcry.

And on that note: I caught a good chunk of the hearing, and I've never seen such a disjointed Q&A in my life. It's as if there were two separate hearings happening at the same time: the real one, about Russia's election interference, and the bogus one on press leaks that was clearly meant as a distraction.
