So...why do you guys hate conspiracy vids?

My friend made me watch "Zeitgheist" or something like that. It disproved religion, talked about 9/11, and then concluded with the US Federal Reserve doing something. It was quite good in the disproving religion, but eh...

I mean, can you really know the truth? I know the videos are annoying, but what if some of the points are true?

Because basic reasoning and a well grounded mind in reality, sprinkled with an ounce or two of intelligence show you otherwise?

I thought a conspiracy was a largely unsupported theory of some event. Are all conspiracies fake just because they are a minority?

Everyone has an opinion. By knowing what a conspiracy video is, you must have an opinion on it. You just don't feel like giving your opinion because you fear that it would influence the responses. Unfortunately, saying that doesn't actually accomplish anything; some people will assume you like them and are flame baiting and others will assume you don't like them and are flame baiting. Either way, you're flame baiting whether you realize it or not.

Well, now that my brain has vomited all over the keyboard...

I think conspiracy videos are a waste of time, frankly. Some have a few good points, but those points are lost in an epic sea of bullshit. It's the same reason why people dislike Michael Moore. His movies are only a few steps above the average conspiracy video because they have less bullshit, but it's still there. He brings up several good points and does a lot of research, but sometimes his personal opinion dominates the facts and distorts them into half-truths. It's sad, his documentaries are great probably 90% of the time but the other 10% of the time he's just slinging crap and that's enough to ruin his overall message.

1st point = no.
2nd point = no.

It's a severe mental illness and lack of basic life skills to come up with, and even believe some conspiracy theory. It's well documented, founded in reality and science, look into it.

OMG! YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!!!!

+1

Except that some of them, like the moon landing ones, don't have ANY good points, and it boggles the mind why people continue to believe even after everything gets refuted line by line. I've wasted my fair share of time trying to spread the light of truth to those that need it most, but now I've realized that they find the dark more appealing. (Let me guess, some of those selfsame people are going to take that sentence too seriously and accuse me of being condescending)

After all, there's something about believing in a massive conspiracy that makes you feel more powerful as an average citizen...after all, why would the government spend all that money to try and fool you if they weren't on some level scared of what you could do with "the truth"? Some of the conspiracy theories are all about ego.

I believe the most simple answer is usually the correct one. That tends to not be the case with conspiracies.

Conspiracies amongst very small groups is, I guess, achievable. The problem with just about all conspiracy theories is that they involve large numbers of people.

Half the time you can't get murderers, rapist, and bank robbers to keep their mouths shut, now they're asking us to believe that large groups of people are going to band together with such dedication of purpose that not one of them is going to let their guard down or have the slightest sense of alienation from the group that would cause them to spill the beans and even let someone in their close circle of friends in on the conspiracy. It's against human nature.

EDIT: Or, leave some evidence of the conspiracy behind for someone in law enforcement that is not in this group to expose.

BTW-the quote in my Sig addresses my feelings about conspiracies.

I would suggest you research the JFK Assassination cover-up. It's a textbook government conspiracy. Here's a terrific video exposing how our own government participated in the assassination of its President (the first 40 minutes details what the Warren Commission conveniently omitted from its official "conclusive" report)

JFK 2 - The Bush Connection

Notice:

1) The bullet hole through the windshield of JFK's limo is proof that another gunman fired at the President. (at the 18 minute mark of the above video)

2) Also notice the bullet hole in the roof frame over the windshield. Again, conveniently omitted by the Warren Commission.

And just in case any more "nutjobs" lie and tell you conspiracies never happen, take a look at this article about Operation Northwoods:

More proof of conspiracy by America's top military leaders

Set. Match.

While i dont believe in all, some of the videos have very good points to back up their claims. Now that doesnt make them correct either. It does scare me how so many people are willing to believe the government never lies to us and would think that they could do no wrong. At least have an open mind for crying out loud.

selective skepticism.
inability to weigh likelihoods of events rationally
and of course they over simplify the world to fit a grand narrative.
spreading disinformation is never great.

And just when you need something to illustrate the points made by the previous posters, along comes this. Perfect.

That reminds me, do you have any links on hand for that? All I've seen is the conspiracy video a while back, but I've never seen the answer to it.

BTW- most of that religion stuff that movie "disproved' used incorrect facts. The federal reserve part was a bit chilling though (however- I couldn't verify half the stuff that was claimed there either).

I do not believe that the government would never lie to us, I just do not believe that it lied to us about the moon landing or 9/11.

Though I think that there was something fishy about JFK, I also doubt that it was part of a huge government-sponsored conspiracy and cover-up involving hundreds of people. I also think that the alleged "cover-up" was just a bunch of either lazy or incompetent officials trying to "cover up" the fact that they were lazy or incompetent.

I also think there has been something of a "cover-up" regarding UFO research by the government, but I do not believe that they have yet encountered actual aliens or alien technology (though some in the government may think they have).

Do I trust the government 100%? No. Would I take the word of the government over the word of conspiracy theorists? I would say about 9 times out of 10, yes.

Who said the government doesn't lie? Anybody that has been watching the evening news for the past thirty years would be a fool to say that. But, that is the point, unless the fraud involves a very small number of people or is little magnitude then it is eventually ferreted out.

Do you really think that in this day of microscopic crime investigations, cell phone cameras, and attention whores, that you could perpetrate a fraud of any importance involving large numbers of people? It isn't going to happen, someone will break ranks and the truth will come out.

That sure reads like opinion to me. Might want to revise your topic summary.
