Why did they bomb a wealthy neighborhood consisting mostly of Muslims and Arabs? Makes no sense to me...

It would really be interesting if they blew something up at mecca...

Al Qaeda hates the Saudi royal family. Bin Laden was booted out of Saudi Arabia, so he wants revenge. They laughed him off when he offered to lead a jihad against Iraq as an alternative to US military action in the early 90s and he hated them more for allowing thr US to remain there for years. The Saud monarchy is corrupt and disliked due to its ties to the US, but would rather continue to be supplied with US weaponry than give in to popular demand.

Al-Queda are RELIGIOUS fanatics, they will not attack a city they consider holy.

Actually Saudi Arabia suspects a terrorist group which has ties to Al Qaida, but isn't really part of it, to have planned several attacks on Mecca earlier this month. They captured several armed terrorists, 2 blew themselves up to prevent capture, and a few surrendered after their friends were shot in fire fights. They were heading for Mecca with loads of explosives.

They see most of the people in Saudi Arabia as traitors, just like the KKK views a lot of white Americans as traitors.

They're crazy basically, they managed to piss off the whole Arab world this time it seems.

Edit: Oh, and the people they bombed were mostly businessmen who traded with the US, as well as their families.

One can only hope. If they do manage to anger the Arabs, their days are numbered. Less Al-Qeda = good for everyone on earth.

This is true. Unfortunately most people look to these freaks as the example for all Islam, a gross mistake since most Muslims are much, much more moderate.

Apparently the Al Queda members involved with the attack were just plain incompetent.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (CNN) -- Saudi officials have told CNN that they believe al Qaeda attackers mistakenly targeted a facility they believed was housing Americans in Saturday's deadly car bombing.

The sources said Saudi authorities learned the information while interrogating an al Qaeda suspect already in their custody about why the area was attacked...

The victims included Saudis, Egyptians, Lebanese, Jordanians, Palestinians, Indians, Pakistanis, Sudanese, Ethiopians, Eritreans, Indonesians, Filipinos, Turks, Sri Lankans, and Romanians.

It is unclear why the attackers believed they were striking at Americans.

Wahabis are not militant nor are they intolerant. Both of your opinions is complete ignorance. Wahabis believe in the teachings of Islam by Imam Muhammed Ibn Abdul Wahab. They believe in Quran as the only source of Islamic law whereas other Imams also consider the sayings and teachings of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (S.A) into account.

Please refrain from calling these people "freaks". Would you call "Protestants" freaks if you are a Catholic?

There is no such thing as a "moderate" Muslim. Muslims believe in Islam. Period. Those committing these acts of violence are not acting in accordance to Islam. Label them as non-believers if you will. But neither Wahabis are freaks or militants or intolerant. Neither are Muslims radical, fundamentalist, moderate or liberal. You either believe in your religion, or you dont.

i have always been of the opinion that Bin Laden wants to overthrow the goverment of saudi arabia. i believe his
attacks on "the west" have been an effort to gain support internally (all politics are local). easier to focus hatred on the outsider than the
local goverment.

i have viewed bin laden's goals as rather parochial...he just wants to run the country (saudi arabia)
now, once he gets control of it, what he wants to do after that, ii'm not sure, but i suspect it involves
trying to "unify" the middle east".

i may be wrong, but this is the framework within which i view his activities.
i don't actually believe he thinks he can "destroy" the west..
but i do believe he thinks he can take over the middle east politically..

Are they? Seems like the problems crop up everywhere Islam is a major power.

Its all about oil. The OBL regime would stop at nothing to line its big oil buddies pockets. That and his family also owns one of the biggest construction firms in the ME which will no doubt get all rebuilding contracts after these bombings.

His grandfather also was a big investor in the Krupp works.

It looks like Al Quada actually took responsibility for the attack. I guess they really are that dumb!

[(CNN) -- Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for last weekend's deadly bombing of a neighborhood in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, according to a statement posted on the terrorist network's Web site.

Saudi officials had initially blamed al Qaeda for Saturday's blast, which killed 17 people and wounded 122. The victims were mostly Arabs. Five of them were children.

In the lengthy statement, al Qaeda disputed that, claiming the compound was rented by employees of the FBI and that several of the victims were American, French and German. It also denied that a large number of children died, unless there was a nursery on site.

The statement claimed more than 55 people were killed in the blast, including 30 Saudi security forces.

Actually, you can speak of 'liberal' or 'moderate' religious people, just as you can speak of 'conservative' religious people. Some people translate their religion to the current age, and some believe you have to take everything literal and must live like it's 0 AD.

Going by that nobody would be a Muslim. Every Muslim country and culture believes and does thing in slightly different ways, a lot of it influneced by the local religions and cultures.
