Not me. I'll stick with WinXP till Vista SP1 comes out.

Just call me cynical :)

I'll definitely play with the beta on a VM before the release. I will also use the release version on a VM for a little while before I move it to an actual machine. I will wait for drivers to catch up to the OS.

I'm just not that excited about it. The promised features get weaker and weaker with every press release. At this point, I just can't see any value in upgrading.

The cost-benefit just isn't there for me: I cannot budget $150 - $300 for eye candy.

I'm really thinking that I'll keep windows xp on my laptop, linux on my server, and make my next desktop into a Mac Mini.

Of course, I will download and try the public beta when it comes out. Who knows, maybe it will change my mind.

I will most likely get it to start playing around and learning its idiosyncrasies. I will do that on a separate drive so I can depend on my exisiting, up-to-date XP Pro to get work done.

I'm sticking with Win2K as long as apps and games works on it. The majority of my work are already on Linux.

Depends. WinXP and its activation kept me away for a while, till I found out it wasn't too bad. I haven't changed anything in my machine, save for a videocard, but I would be VERY irked if I had to keep calling in microsoft to "allow myself" to use "their operating system".

And considering all these supposed DRM rumors, I may stay away for a while till we see what is true and what is not. To be forced to get stuff like DRM supported hardware like monitors is absolutely ludicrous IMO. Thank god I've been using Linux more lately and have been getting a lot more comfortable ;)

I just personally don't like how everything in this world from CDS, to movies, to OSes is going from "if i buy it, it is mine" to "the product is theirs, but I'm only purchasing the ability to USE it"

If i buy it, its mine. Plain and simple

Still using Win2k on my winboxen. I'll buy it if I see value add. WinXP was a non-value add release for me, so I've skipped it.

FYI, you won't be able to watch any sort of 'premium' content (as designated by the providers) on Linux either until they implement DRM (HDMI, etc). Same goes for Mac, and anything else that you want to be able to view this content on.

Which is fine, because I get by very well without using MPAA drugs... Longhorn might have a chance to get on my system if the DRM is optional and capable of being disabled (yes, I know I won't be able to watch "protected" content, but I don't care). I suppose, though, that Linux (and XP in a VM if absolutely necessary) will be a much better option, because I don't expect MS to cater to the probably limited crowd of people who would rather not have corporate-sponsored spyware on their systems. :frown:

if the mpaa and microsoft think i'm just gonna dump my dell 2405fp before its dead and burried, they can suck my balls. I wont support a company that tries to control how I use my computer. However, i'm sure that there will be hacks on linux as fast as they put it out. If we can view it, that means we already have everything we need to decrypt it. Its just a matter of writing a lib like libdvdcss. The more complicated they make their protections, the more they make it harder for the average joe. Which means they more they will loose sales. (I'm not saying linux converts, I just mean less media will be sold if its hard to use or has super limiting drm). They can drm their stock down the drain for all I care.

There are already TPM drivers in Linux, the difficult part will be interoperating with whatever crap MS and the "content industry" comes up with.

I will just for the hell of it, because I'll probably be able to get it for $20 or less through my university. Now whether I'll actually bother to install and use it is a different matter entirely. :p

I agree 100% - if I ended up having to pay more than about $20 for it, I probably wouldn't bother. Honestly Windows XP is a great OS and I don't need to upgrade from it at all.

i would just buy it for the eye candy, to me, a clean interface seems faster to me. also, supposedly they are making the registry neater which is allowing for better performance regardless of winfs. personally, i would get it even though they keep cutting chunks and features at every press release.

I'll probably grab the upgrade at some point. It'd be purely for the sake of trying it out and learning it, as I've moved off windows as a desktop machine pretty much altogether. I imagine it'll be more or less unavoidable at work though, so knowing it a bit can't hurt.

Wont touch it. The idea of having my laptop cpu's fan turn on just due to the enhanced UI is criminal.

Not realy. There would be some people that do that, but it's generally a minority.

Most common people don't care what OS they are using. They'll end up using Vista because that's what will be installed on their computer next time they buy a new one.

I agree.

I prolly won't buy it, but will get a copy as part of my OEM business. I'll try it on VM first, but I don't think I'll use it myself. I'll sell it to my customers though.

Uh... I'll wait till the whole DRM thing is sorted out first. Don't want no corporate spyware crap on my system. Knowing Microsoft, I'll wait a while (next service pack) until I get this thing.

DRM = Big turnoff.
