So who wants to help me build my new system?

Well, after seeing my friend build his own computer, i would like to build something for myself. Here is what i have in mind, but i know im probably making some bad choices, so help me out:

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe

AMD Athlon 64 FX-55

Crucial Ballistix 1GB DDR500

NO CLUE ON GFX CARD

WD 74GB 10,000RPM SATA
WD 250GB 7,200RPM SATA

Logitech Z-5500

Now, i think i might get water cooling, but i am not sure...

This computer will be used for some video editing, a little photoshop, LOTS of half-life 2 and battlefield 2, maybe splinter cell, website coding, music, ect...and i like to do a lot of things at the same time, so i will have like music, and photoshop, and dreamweaver, all open at the same time. I am really a noob with this stuff, and i have never built a computer before...so tell me what i am doing right and wrong.

Thanks

well you may want to wait for a bit til amd puts out their dual core designs, that will help you alot with multitasking and photoshop...if you don't want to wait give us your budget so we can see what your working with

The FX-55 is probably overkill for most people. That is a fine processor if you are going to drop more than $3000 on a system. Otherwise, you can get 80% of the performance for 30% of the price.

So, if your budget is limited, get a good Athlon 64 and spend the difference on a better vid card.

On the other hand, if your last name is "Trump" or "Gates" then get the best and most expensive of everything.

As far as graphics cards go, if you think that Linux might be in your future, go for something nVidia. If you want to go SLI, then nVidia is your only choice.

FX doesn't worth it. As harrkev mentioned, save the money for a better graphic card and more memory. More memory helps both gaming and photoshopping. If you are a newbie and not going to overclock DDR 500 is overkill. Getting 2GB value memory yields more performance than buying high-end ram for Athlon64 CPU which has built in memory controller.

Graphic card you can go with GeForce 6 6800 series; if you plan to do SLI. Well a non-SLi setup is more than enough for Battlefield 2 and halflife 2. An ATi X800XL which costs around $260 is perfectly good for both of the games.

Well after looking at that article, it still looks like you get a lot better performance from the FX-55 than the 4000...but what i need to know is, would i notice a performance difference with all the stuff that i will be doing on my computer...ect

i dont think theres a lot of performance difference... just get a 3800 and OC to 2.6 same as fx55... save urself over $400... some of that money put it on a nVidia 6800GT or ATI x800 and ur set... or just wait for dual cores from AMD.

If you really do crave the FX-ly performance, buy the 4000+ (same basic chip, same cache and whatnot) and OC it a little. 200 Mhz and you have a multip. locked (big deal) FX-55.

Well, i do not really want to overclock anything on my system...because overclocking expires the warranty on my processor, and its just not safe...
