So who sells water filters for the paranoid?

Honestly, I can taste something stale in PUR filters, while Brita has a little bit of a metallic twang to me. I also find it hard to ignore all the flouride talk going around.

Are there any stand-alone models(things I don't have to install under my sink) that get the job done?

Brita is in collusion with the Freemasons, which explains why their products don't completely filter that taste out (sterility drugs and barbiturates, fyi).

Those type of filters really don't do much, and the cartridges are worthless within a couple of uses. (depending on your starting water conditions.) IF you're REALLY paranoid about your water, invest in a good quality RO drinking water system, and get all the nasties out.

They certainly aren't the only ones in the biz, (nor the cheapest) but IMO, they are the best...

I'm just fine with regular water, minus the additives. I'm not running any science experiments. :) The thought of reverse osmosis cleaning me out doesn't sound pleasant.

Serious as a heart-attack. Check your local water report...

Truthfully, Britta and PUR filters are OK for the first couple of gallons, but they only have a small amount of media (activated carbon) and the pores get clogged pretty quick. They are also very limited in what they will remove from your water. If your tap water is already pretty good, they might be good enough to give you decent water, but if it's like MOST tap water...Like I said, I won't even use the gunk the city sends through the pipes in my fish tanks...

We're adapted to it. Remember, we were drinking water out of springs, rivers and ponds for quite a while before RO came along.

A bit of sterilized fecal matter never harmed no one.

Have read it, all in within standards. I too was interested like you. I have been to other municipalities, small and big. I can tell the difference in taste, which I believe to be a big factor in cleanliness/feelgoodness of the water. (which it may not be) As long as it tastes good I am COOL. When I do visit my dad (in a smaller town) his water tastes like ******. Where as when I go to a similar size city (with probably a larger water budget) as mine it tastes/smells good and I am cool. So, as long as my water at my main place tastes/smells good I am COOL. As soon as it tastes/smells like crap, I will ask you for suggestions Boomer.

Springs, rivers, and ponds don't have fluoride in them.

It can also create brown stains on them. That happened to me, got laser whitening, then it happened again.

So there was no coffee added to the water? KEKE

The market is full of water filtration systems, and is best to investigate on a system that you can get replacement cartridge locally.

Price & quality wise is vastly different between models & manufactures, and some inexpensive systems are just as good as the more expensive ones.

I wouldn't be too concern with the volume gallon rating on the filter cartridge, because water sediments/conditions vary from place to place. Larger filters will last longer and tend to deliver more gallon/minute but for most home use any smaller system will do.

It is best to have your water tested before making the purchase because your local water may be good enough to go with a cheap/low up keep 2 or 3 stage filter system.
2 stage tend to have a multi grade filter 5/30, 5/50 or 5/75 micron polly filter as the first stage then a second stage 5 micron or less carbon filter.
3 state is similar to the 2 stage but the sediment & pre carbon filter is separate filters unlike 2 stage multi-grade system (3 stage tend to have longer service life span than 2 stage).

RO is an over kill for most city water system, however it is more effective at taking out minerals/bacteria/germs/parasites than 2-3 stage filters. RO system cost about 2X more than 2-3 stage system and up keep cost is slightly higher as well. That said, RO is the way to go if you have the money for it and want to remove unpredictable quality of city water.

RO is great to use with well water system combine with a coarse sediment or bio-sand filter, and a UV between the sediment & RO unit would make your water that much more kosher.

Good luck!

So are there no solo units that I can just stuff into the top shelf of my refridgerator & fill when I need to?

I went to the GE one filter system that you install under the sink that has the faucet...it was easy and works great plus overall its cheaper than the counter top or the Brita/PUR pitcher filter ones. Dont get the unit that screws to the tap, they are uselss and dont work that well.

Yes they do, flouride is present in various concentrations in most water supplies.

Of course you wouldn't, chlorine, used to disinfect most public water supplies is quite harmfull to fish. Tap water is hardly toxic soup however, its proven perfectly safe to drink provided it meets EPA standards.

Drinking a toxic chemical so that it can flow over your teeth is ludicrous. My brother is a civil engineer who does a lot of testing for chemicals like dead, asbestos, etc. His wife is a dentist. They use a reverse osmosis filter.
