So who makes the best home theater amps these days?

why doesn't GTaudiophile know this?

methinks you should change your name to GTcanonphile

Yeah, the name is kinda old and no longer applies 🙂

I just want something reliable, under $400, that can output good and loud sound to a 5.1 setup.

What kind of speakers do you have? Do you think you could get a demo with your specific speakers or the same line in a store with some different receivers?

For $400 I think I'd be looking at
Panasonic's digital receivers
Denon
HK
Onkyo
Pioneer

my sister and bro in law just got one of these

powering Klipsch SLX fronts, C2 center and S2 rears as well as a 10 in sub, sounds great

Krell, Accuphase, PSAudio, Cello, Perreaux, FM Acoustics, Mark Levinson.

All downstream of Lexicon, Wadia, Madrigal (processing/preamplification) of course. 😉

Do you need a whole receiver or just an amp for $400?

I was thinking whole receiver is what you needed, but if you just need a multichannel amp, spidey07's suggestions are a better idea.

meh, krell has gone downhill IMO. Nothing beats their pure class a series, IMHO. although I was impressed with their integrted for the price.

Boulder Amps 2000 Series

Krell's Master Reference Series

Edge Reference Series Monoblocks

Moon Classic Rock

Theta Digital Citadel

Goldmund Telos 2500

Musical Fidelity kW Series

Monaco Audio Amps

Pass Labs X.5 Series

Classé Omega Mono

Here's my personal favorite. If I had the money, I'd bi-amp each of my speakers with these monoblock amplifiers. Alas, I can't burn the > $1 million that would cost:

Halcro Super Fidelity Amplification dm88

If you're into music, there's some nice 27w amplifiers like this $80,000 one:

Audio Note Ongaku

And if you're totally insane, there's the 150w WAVAC unit for just $350,000:

WAVAC Audio Labs SH-833

Lamm ML 2.1 Tube Amps are sweet sounding things 😀

BTW, OP, you only listed receivers and not amps. Receivers are all in one box amp, preamp/processor, tuner vs. Stand alone amplifiers...
