Yeah, it's a flying tank, but it can't hover. How good is a helicopter that can't hover? It also had notoriously thin skin on the top.

Last Wednesday I was eating my lunch parked next to one of the world's busiest nternational trading routes - Huron Church road in Windsor, Ontario.

A flatbed trailer carrying 2 large green shrink-wrapped vehicles was headed for the USA. Not sure what they were though, they looked like APCs? They didn't have wheels on them yet, maybe they were boats even. No clue. Maybe they are manufactured somewhere in Ontario for the US military?

It'll be much faster, and won't need armor. Which many people consider counter intuitive.

Also, if a new hummer were to be released, it would have to have a stronger engine and all that.

It won't happen, at least the jeep will not be brought back in it's old form. The reasons they got rid of it was it was the last vehicle to have a gasoline engine which made for a logistical nightmare to procure gasoline when every other wheeled vehicle were diesel powered.

The idea is they're going very fast, k? And so when they're driving by, by the time the moron terrorist ignites or activates his IED, the jeep will be sufficiently past.
Besides, those things were notoriously unsafe, they rolled easily and they had no heat without an expensive retrofit gasoline powered heater that was prone to leak gasoline. There was also little to no crew protection. I was in the Army when they got rid of the last of the jeeps, all units that had them had to cut them in half with a blowtorch and send the halves back on huge pallets to prevent them ever from being used again. A few might have escaped this fate, but not very many.

I don't know where you get your information, but the Humvees are much much faster than the jeeps. I've logged many miles in both vehicles, give me a Humvee any day for speed.

I'm sad to see the Huey go, it has a ton of potential; if they further developed it into a armor gunship/transport, and add faster engines, they'd be able to mount a gatling gun on the nose, two gatlings on the side, rocket launchers, and an m240 on the rear. It'd be the ultimate armored transport and support copter.
The MV-22 Osprey can't even have m240s on the side, due to the tilt rotors. :(

Who are you, Rip Van Winkle? The Hueys were phased out 15 years ago and replaced with Black Hawks.

Yeah, the hummers are definitely fast, thats why the Iraqis are having a field day with their IEDs.

Also, in address to all your other assertions, the jeep and the hummer may be comparable when both have limited armor, but these new jeeps they're thinking of putting in are faster and more reliable.
My source is a docent of Military Jeeps Museum up in Seattle, as well as an article from the Military magazine.

And yes, I know the Hueys aren't used by the Army anymore, but I was talking about the Marines. ;)

Tbh, they should be using them, modified hueys with bigger engines would make amazing weapons platform. Sure you got the Cobra and Apache, but the Huey would be a perfect ground support. You could mount 2 m240s on either side, a gatling gun on the nose, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, buff this thing up, give it a new engine, all that, and this thing would kick some serious ass.
I'd much rather see the army develop that than start acquiring F-35s which are totally inappropriate for its branch's function.

The reason we kick@$$ right now is because no country in the world has the training that we give our pilots. So even if F-15s can get killed by British Typhoons, training is far more important.

Same thing if we used some Russian helos, we would kick even more @$$, but once again training makes our Apaches appear quite good =)

Our weapons are a lot more advanced. Think of the airframe as just the carrier for the avionics.

And I've already been posting in this thread, so you can't "anticipate" that which has already happened.

Look, we get it- you're gay and proud. Now drop it and let's move on, lover.

Crap, with George Bush serving as commander in chief, I wouldn't join the boy scouts. Probably get sent right into the meat grinder called Iraq.

I wonder how much money they wasted on the Comache Helicopter. You'd figure after spending all that $, they would have actually decided to get some. Of course, the Apache is so bad ass, they probably didn't need the Comache.

I think it was around $20 billion.

Did they look like this? It might have been an Amphibious Assault vehicle (AAV). They don't have wheels, they have tracks, like a tank. They are used as a troop transport.

If you're asking me, I'm considering going to Westpoint. Thing is, I have other dreams as well, and I don't think the military itself is for me. I'd love to join the marines (I live right next to MCAS Miarmar), and fly the Super Cobras, but I also have other things planned. I might become a military analyst, or I'd design weapons for the Pentagon.

Lets try and keep this a non-inflammatory topic. Keep your political sentiments and obnoxious statements out of my thread.
And you too, eits, please.

The Comanche never was meant to be an Apache. It was meant to be a Stealth Copter, and an armed scout, holding all its weapons, except its flak cannon, internally.
It was disbanded because its the government, and regardless of political party, they don't care about whose money it is, as long as its not their own. Understandable of course.
At any rate, the RQ-Firebird, an unmanned copter scout with its own programmable AI made by Grumman, will be the comanche. It doesn't need stealth because its cheap, and and because no human will be inside the vehicle.

It was probably a Stryker.

Military Magazine is good, and Military Officers comes after.
Then Military History, and Military History Illustrated. History mag is alright, I like how its published by the show, but I'm more of a military analyst and historian, so some of their stuff is dull to me.

Does anybody here know anyone currently deployed on the Eisenhower (CVN69)?

I've got a couple of questions.

Just got finished reading up on some of the weapons in World War 2. My favorite is the Thompson, followed by the Bar, followed by the M3, followed by the Garand. Anyone else have a gun they like?

So, I read that the M16A4 is out by 2007, anyone know the replacement? I have a feeling though that the democrats won't want to authorize new weapons to the military for other reasons that can be discussed in other threads.
Sucks.
Also, the UH-1Y is coming! I love Hueys, and this one is called the "Venom". Its able to hold more munitions, and go faster, due to 4 rotors and stronger engines.
