So who is actually going buy buy a GTX280?

With the 9800 GTX and the 4850 priced at under $200 it doesn't matter if you like ATI or NVIDIA there are two great cards for very cheap. It makes me wonder who is actually going to fork over the money for the new GTX280. Also the 9800 GTX+ and 4870 will be here soon as well for right at $200 IIRC.

It may be a great product but are people actually going to drop $400-$600 for not that much better performance over the current cards?

Not me. CAD $700 for a video card is too much. I spent almost CAD$600 on a 8800GTS 640 on launch day and vowed I'll never spend that much on a video card again.

I got my money's worth out of buying a 7900GTX back in early 2006, but that was at $500 not $650.

I prefer single cards over SLI/CF for lower heat and noise so I might get one if the price has dropped well below $600 by the time I replace my A64 X2 4200+ system.

I'm also thinking of waiting for the 55nm refresh to cut the power use and/or increase the performance a bit. Ignoring the 7800 series and waiting for 7900 worked for me last time.

Well for those that don't mind spending the cash, at least they are getting the best performance in single-gpu.

But the GTX 280 is a terrible value and a brute-force solution, it seems like the HD 4870X2 might give it a SERIOUS run for it's money.

I got it for $429 though, so I don't really count. I wouldn't pay $649 for the GTX 280 and I wouldn't pay $399 for the GTX 260. But a GTX 280 for $429 is fine for me.

The GTX 280 makes sense, to me the GTX 260 is the real failure of the bunch. A lot of review sites have been talking about it as a good value for $399... I don't see what they are talking about. It's seriously slower than a 9800 GX2 and it's not much faster than the 9800GTX, much less the 9800GTX+, in 90% of scenarios. It will beat the G92 cards by a large margin in high res/AA+AF. But in the average gaming scenario, not by much. For twice the price of the 9800GTX, the GTX 260 is worse than the GTX 280 in terms of value IMO.

Me. I'm waiting for the high end ATI card in August. Then I'll decide between the ATI car, 280 GTX, or 9800GX2.

I've decided I will get the GTX 280 through step up. It just doesn't make sense for me to go ATi, even if the HD4870 is on par with the GTX 260 or maybe even 280, when I can get the GTX 260 for $60 or the 280 for $300.

I'm making a promise to myself that unless I have serious problems with the GTX280, I'm not going to buy another video card until at least 2 generations from now, also unless a game really calls for an upgrade, heheh.

I'm waiting till the 4870X2 is out...if it has more power I'll get it and if its slightly less I can hope that it will atleast cause a price drop in the GTX280...and if neither are true GTX260 all the way

I might consider it in a few months if prices drop ... frankly my 8800GTX still does everything I need it to do so I'm not feeling any sense of urgency to upgrade.
