So who here really wants to buy a Scion xB? xA?

Well there seems to be a lot of young'uns here, so I thought I would see how many ATers think they would actually buy a Scion. Toyota is betting some big bucks that this new brand of there's will be a hit. They've had some success marketing to a younger demographic, especially with the latest Matrix and Celica models.

I still can't figure who the Scion is for though. I definately DO NOT like it (center-mounted gauges? ick!), and I'm 23. I don't think they're marketing to me. Perhaps they're after the 'first-time driver' segment of high school juniors and seniors? Or are they going for the older Gen X'ers? Looking at the Scion xB, it almost looks like they're after a certain culture demographic--inner-city, urban types who listen to hip-hop (and who think the Mercedes G-wagon is the ultimate SUV.)

Whaddya think? I've put some links below in case you haven't seen or heard much about these vehicles.

2004 Scion xA
2004 Scion xB

The xA is too small. The xB is fugly. Center gauges suck. The names all suck, including Scion. I'm not buying one unless they give it to me.

ok both thoes are ugly. i wont be buying one.

and from teh looks of a lot of the concepts they have i looks like ill be buying used card from the mid to late 90's for teh rest of my life.

Would anybody really buy the xb? It looks like an oversized matchbox. Ugly doesn't do it justice. Old Land Rovers had more style than that. Also, I like my gauges in front of my. The passenger doesn't need to know what the oil pressure or engine temp. is.

I sat in an xB at the LA Auto Show.

I like it, though I probably wouldn't get one (I would want it to be a little larger, with more power).

The seating is really nice. With the front seats all the way back, there is still plenty of room in the back seats (the guy behind me was amazed).

I also liked the "center" mounted guage. Because of it's placement, and it's size, it was very easy for me to glance at while looking out the windshield with my eyes focused on a distant object. There is just less head and eye movement involved then glancing at a traditional guage. Also it is located right in the center (like on a Mini). Rather if you were looking out, it would be right in the lower right of your vision.

Thank god, someone else that finally feels the same thing as me. Why are all these concept cars so ugly??? It seems like 90% of the cars coming out are uglier than the cars they replace, and the 10% that do look better are only marginally better.

i was at the LA auto show a couple days ago.

i swear toyota is going down the tubes. btw honda had some new car their that lookec like the scion xb also. didnt look at it because it looked like crap.

the xb is the ugliest thing there. not only is it ugly the engine is crap ( a 1.5 L 4 banger, for god's sake a corolla has more than that not to mention this isnt a honda or nissan engine its a toyota with less power in its class as usual), and as is custom on all toyotas the cup holders are inthe wrong spot. this cupholder problem alone is terrible. most toyotas have the cup holder in front of the shifter. it is just retarded. the new corollas have the cup holder so that the cup blocks the air conditioning vents. toyota is freaking retarded.

i sat in a pontiac aztec while i was there, and while the aztec looks like crap, the interior is much more useable than the xb except that the styling on the interior is horrible in the aztec too.. i also noticed there werent many people in the toyota pavilion. what with their new found dedication to crappy engines and focus on cushy non responsive rides , and crappy cupholder placement, ugly cars/ boring cars, i dont know what they are thinking.

i am almost ashamed to be from torrance.

I don't get the xA...looks like a whacked out Matrix which I don't like to begin with.
I do like the xB which reminds me of the Element, which I also like.

I don't like the center-mounted guages. The one in the xB looks particularly hard to see.

Not really, they're just rebranding other models they sell in Japan. It's relativly safe for them.

I'm guessing they're targeting these at the kids. I'm a little surprised more people here don't like them, from what I read in motor trend, the average AT-OT user is exactly who toyota is targeting. Myself, I'd rather not drive a station wagon, regardless how "hip" they are.

Nah..I wouldn't get it.
Toyota should just concentrate on their 2 brands.

What Bob Lutz said about brands like Scion:

Efforts to design vehicles for younger buyers won't work well, he said. Some rivals, such as Toyota Motor Corp. with its Scion vehicles, are doing that.

Such efforts are ``an exercise in futility,'' Lutz said. ``You are not going to know what the 16- and 17-year-olds want and the minute you think you do and put out ads that say, `Hey kids, this is cool, trust me,' that's a guarantee that it's going to be a flop. They like the same stuff we do, they just can't afford it.''
