I'm home for the summer after my freshmen year of college. Naturally, I've been job-hunting since I got home. On a whim, I walked into a restaurant one afternoon and asked the manager for an application, and voila, the next morning I'm showing up for my first day of training.
I've never been a waiter before. That said, I'm beginning to think this restaurant management hasn't got it together. I've only been there for four days, but things aren't looking very good. The manager always seems scattered, yells at people constantly for random things. All that aside, the "training" they gave me wasn't really training-just basically following people who are my own age around (who are trying to do their jobs themselves), learning nothing, and then trying to do it myself. No one ever taught me how to use the computer to ring in orders, or the register, or anything of that nature until we were very crowded and I needed to do such things. Naturally, I get yelled at for not knowing how.
The clencher for me: He (the manager) gives virtually NO advance notice of when he expects you to come in-for me thus far, he's told me the day before when he wants me to see me the following day (come in tomorrow at X time, etc). Furthermore, there's NO SET END TIME. You're never scheduled to work from 8-4, or whatever, you're just told to come in until 8, and you can leave when he says it's ok. Is that normal!? And oh yeah, I worked 8 hours today with no breaks/lunch. I was starving. On top of all that, the pay sucks (3.40/hr). There's tips, but still...
Guess I'm just sort of ranting and/or organizing my thoughts...I have an interview at Osco Monday evening, hopefully something will turn up, cause this sucks. I hate to talk like that, because I don't want to sound like a spoiled teen or whatever-I know summer jobs are supposed to suck, and I'm not looking for anything glamorous. I just really, really hate this job...
