So who here believes in Bible Codes?

Watching a show on it on the History channel RIGHT NOW in the west coast. pretty interesting. seems kind of random but some of the stuff appears to be more than a coincidence.

Bible codes what? Like conspiracy theories relating to hidden codes in the Bible text or something?

...in any case I don't know enough/care enough to formulate an educated guess. So how's about "maybe". 😛

I've seen that. It's really not all that remarkable. IIRC we're using arbitrary ways to decipher the text and given how much test there is to decipher, it's not very surprising they find some coincidental "predictions". As in the Nostradamus episode, what everyone is really waiting for is for someone studying these codes to predict an event instead of post-dicting it.

I did, still kind of do. But some guy did a test and looked for codes in the Moby Dick novel and found quite a bit of stuff as well. When I saw that I started to think twice. Although the chances of them finding codes in the Bible in the way that they are, are statistically mind-boggling.

YART in disguise.

The word "believes" in your thread title immediately focuses this thread on one of mankind's most perplexing issues: Believing in something you cannot see, hear, feel, taste, etc.

I believe the bible is a compilation of the musings, theorizings and fourth-hand knowledge of many men, compiled over the years. Much like "The Telephone Game" we all played as children, the bible is not to be taken seriously.

they never really explained how the codes were found as patterns and how big of a portion of the bible were the codes pulled from. this is the reason why i'm a bit skeptical. if they said that these related phrases were found within 1 or 2 pages of the bible and in sequential patterns, then maybe i would believe it.

booo. i don't care much to debate about religion so no this isn't a religion thread in disguise. i searched the off-topic and didn't find anyone ever talking about such a topic. i thought it was just interesting. it's more of a conspiracy theory sort of thread 😛

Numerology is bogus and has been debunked many times... the odds of finding things in the Bible are not mind-boggling... if you look for stuff, you'll find it.

haha I had to look at the topic twice - I thought it read "So who here believes in Bible Codecs?"

You might be able to find something on google about it. I watched a special on the History Channel about it. It was some university professor who did the test.

If you want something and look hard enough, you'll eventually find it. Isn't that the saying? Plus any language can be translated so many ways. The word fvck has so many different meanings. Given that it's written, I can translate it to favor my interests.

The mind-boggling part is that they find phrases, words, and sentences that relate to eachother very close together.

ya. it's easy to find words if you look hard enough but to find phrases close to each other is interesting.

Duh! 😕 Isn't that what a good composition is?

Well, DUH! If it was something you could see and taste it wouldn't require belief. It would be knowledge.

except with the telephone game, the dead sea scrolls and other original documents aren't involved. king james version? known to have over three thousand translation errors. so in that case, yes. don't just make judgement on what grandma has on the coffee table, sonny.

King James Translation.
Psalm 42
42nd word from the beginning is "shake" or "Shakes" (I don't recall, and I don't own a King James Translation)
42nd word from the end of the psalm is "spear"

Shakespeare was one of the people working on this translation and he turned 42 that year.

Of course, this is all rumor, but I checked it about ten years ago and it was true in the King James copy I found.

Now, having said that, it might be surprising that I'm a Christian and I do believe the prophecies in the Bible are true and will happen (those that haven't already). I don't know about any Bible Codes.... I haven't heard of that before.

I can't see electricity but I still believe it exists.
