you say that like its a bad thing. BTW most of the people who post here are nerds. thats not a bad thing.

It's the way that it was implied.. "imaginary girlfriend" and all that. It was the derogatory form of "nerd".

I wish I had the time, money and (most importantly) space to setup everything I've got. The computer room is already noticably hotter than the rest of the apartment. 🙁

During the Fall bestbuy and other appliance stores throw the window AC units on discount. I picked up one with a remote for like $129 a few years ago.

The new house doesn't need it but at my old one being upstairs with a room full of machines got unbearable without it.

my network setup is pretty basic...

dsl modem -> dlink router -> 3 computers directly behind the router (my computer, my roommate's computer, and our htpc) and 1 cable running to a cheapo 4-port hub that we use for xbox, playstation, and short-term uplink when we need to use our laptop on the living room. I also have gigabit nics on my computer and the HTPC with a direct connect running between the two for file transfers (my computer has a dvd burner... the htcp does not)

I'll keep that in mind. But with that and a few older Sun machine I'd be worried about the electric bill. 😛

I keep thinking I'll be able to use some older, lower power consumption, PCs for things like firewalls, routers, etc. But every time I try it, there's always some dumb thing that stops me. Like, "You must have a Math CoProcessor to run xxxxx". Or, "You must have xxxx memory to run this application". So I end up using "modern" PCs, with heatsinks the size of a small milk carton and power consumption to match.
