Well, the company I work for sold the business to another company who is going to tear it down. Next week will be my last week after 17 years. Not sure what to do now.

Qualifying rant
but sometimes no matter what you do your on the "list". My last job I was at for 15 years but I got let go anyway. Your probably thinking, "yea, he got complacent" but the exact opposite was the truth. The company used SAP software and I was the only one in our dept. who took the time to learn how to properly use it and could take accurate inventories, didn't matter. They started a 3rd shift but had no one to handle the chemicals so I volunteered to stay over to make sure they had stuff to work on, didn't matter. What mattered was the manager was a moron who made so many unnecessary procedural changes he about doubled the time it took to get a batch made, the "showboat" type who would run upstairs and convince the plant managers he "fixed" a problem that never existed in the first place. At the end of the day the labor cost was skyrocketing so what to do, confess you fucked up what was running perfectly or chop the older guys (who made the most $$). Fast forward 2 years and he quits and said managers spent $3 million fixing all his mistakes, sometimes you get caught in a bad situation but that's life, you try and move on the best you can.

Hey I don't need the explanation I have seen this first hand. When the budget is in the red and everyone is panicking all bets are off.
 
My mom has somehow gotten through all the layoffs so far at Kodak. Not much longer until she retires, hopefully they don't get rid of her before then...

There is an older lady at my current job who pretends like she doesn't know whats going on but she totally does.

I wonder if she is like that. The place can be total chaos and this lady is like do de do de do de do fixing everything that everyone else is panicking about and then she pretends like nothing was wrong. But she had to have seen it coming because she was ready for it. :hmm:

IT is sweet. Young companies tend to just take care of their people better and strive to provide a "work - life" balance, but I think sectors that are doing well tend to make that easier to accomplish.
 
My company is still in the process of being merged with another, so I'm kind of nervous but so far I think we'll be ok judging by other stuff going on. My boss even got a budget for stuff around the office this year, he never gets a budget.

Any job that's in front of a computer is at risk of a layoff any time though in this day and age, it's kind of scary really. It's only going to get worse as companies continue to pinch pennies more and more to increase profits.

If I lost my job I really don't know what I'd do. I'd really be royally screwed. There's really not much if anything in tech here. I'd probably have to get into mining or trades but it's hard to do that when you did not go to school for it as they wont take you without proper education and experience.

A caution for you youngsters out there, don't be too comfortable with your current position. If you have the opportunity to branch out, take that chance. I had many opportunities to branch out to other fields over the years but didn't cause I was too comfortable and contend with my current job.

that is a MAJOR reason (among others) that i left my first job out of school. i was learning NOTHING after about a year, but stayed for over 5 years anyways. the biggest kick in the ass was when i was told i was almost laid off.

since i left, my salary has nearly tripled, and my resume is about a billion times more useful now and i'm way more marketable with all of the technologies i've worked on thus far.

i still eat lunch with the guys from my first company every now and then and they are doing the same thing right now. if those guys lose they will have very little to put on their resumes, and i'm sure their pay still sucks.

You stayed at a bad job too long, you have like bad job PTSD. I really didn't mean anything by what I said. Just curious, do you have tinnitus? I don't mean anything by that either, FYI. Its related to perceiving patterns that aren't really there. Hence the curiosity. Because you projected intent into what I typed. It would mean your dopamine is jacked up.

Well my bad then, the job itself wasn't "bad" until the manager they hired made it bad. This area is not one for a lot of opportunities so if your making decent jack and your up to 4 weeks/year PTO then you try and make it work out if you can.
