so my brother in-law is told to remove his lappy from the case, open the clamshell, then close it and put it on the conveyor for the x-ray pass-thru. he walks thru the threshold scanner, waits for his lappy, and waits, and waits, and waits...no lappy. two people have already passed him by. he asks security why hasn't his lappy passed thru the scanner yet. they look inside the scanner and proclaim that his lappy has already been scanned, and then asked him why he didn't notice sooner and notify them right away. they pull him off to the side and start accusing him of having an accomplice in front of him, so he can claim for the loss. a shouting match ensues, airport security arrives and he gets cuffed, hauled off and arrested for disorderly conduct and creating a security problem. my bro-in-law tries to file an official complaint and file charges against the security co. that runs the machines. he is reminded that he is under arrest, is read his rights and advised to get his lawyer there soonest. after some tense hours at airport security, he's let go. he misses his flight, is out a lappy with all his work data and presentation files for his now missed business meeting, and he is now profiled at all airports, all because those scanner personnel couldn't secure his lappy for ten seconds and refused to accept responsibility via accusing him of criminal intent. sue job? hell yeah. anyone else experience same?

I know lots of people are pushing for smaller government and all, but I think a government agency would be a lot more strict and professional than the private sector. Some private companies were accused of hiring people with criminal records! As with the private sector, companies look to cut costs and maximize profit, so they make cuts on our safety whether it's through the people they hire, the equipment, whatever. With all that has happened lately, I don't think that it should be an issue anymore of who should be handling this.

EDIT: And BTW, I'm terribly sorry to hear what happened Tweaker2. Best of luck to him...

Sorry, I've seen how the federal government handles things before. I'd rather not have them involved.

[Sarcasm] Yes, we want the government who always has the most helpful and efficient employees of any sector working these airport security jobs. [/Sarcasm]

I got pulled into a room to get my bag searched because I had toenail and fingernail clippers in my carry-on. I was very cooperative but the guy was being a real hard ass. What was I gonna do, manicure the crew to death?

Then I saw this cartoon in USA today a few days after my flight. It made me LMAO. Cartoon

Let's make the coast guard and boarder patrol private since the government can't do sh!t like so many people stated.

I was joking.

On the news awhile ago they were running a story on a laptop stealing scam going on at MIA.
Worked like this...
(lets for simplicity say Criminal 1 is named Jack and Criminal 2 is named Biff)
1) You put your laptop on the conveyor belt
2) Guy in front of you, Jack, gets stopped on purpose for having change or whatever in his pocket. In the meantime your laptop is on the other side allready waiting to be picked up.
3) Biff meanwhile was in front of Jack in line and is allready on the other side with your laptop. He then takes your laptop. You can't do anything because you are waiting while Jack is being frisked.

Yep.

Some hints:

If you're traveling with someone, take their carry-on bags, purses, etc., and have them pass through the metal detector first and go directly to the conveyor belt at the end of the X-ray machine. Then you put all the bags on the X-ray machine belt and go through the metal detector yourself.

If you're traveling alone, make sure there is NO ONE in front of you when you put your bags in the machine. Make sure you have NO metal on you to get stopped by security at the metal detector, and keep your eyes glued to the conveyor belt where your bag(s) are.

Also, you can ask if it to be hand searched by security if it bothers you that much. Here is a great book you should pick up, it is well worth it, saves you hundreds of dollars with great tips and hints too. (or you can be cheap like my friend and go to the book store and read it for a few hours and leave it there) :D

Thats the exact system the wife and I use when traveling, too many ways to get screwed when going through the metal detectors.

The nation guard was running security in South Bend when I flew out of here in late october. The guardsman almost took my wallet. It was in the holding tray, and I didn't get it out fast enough before he grabbed it from me to take to the beginning of the line. I had to holler at him several times to get his attention. Unbelievable.
