Considering that VISTA is being released next year, the 'dust will settle' more like in 2 years from now if anything..

Yeah, but at least by then we'll have some benchmarks.

I hear you. I still have a 3800 Newcastle! with a 9800. I recently bought 2 gigs of PC3200 and won't even think about AM2 boards right now. I look at the S939-X2's almost every day and try to find a reason to upgrade but keep coming up short.

For starters, I don't do much multi-tasking and I only play games about 5% of the time on this PC. My media box has a Sempron 3100 with a 6600GT hooked to my HDTV for the shooter games I play. The sad truth is that the Sempron, originally intended for PVR use, gets more game play and still works fine for my needs which shoots the hell out of any logic I can dream up for an X2 upgrade. The Newcastle and the Sempron both run perfect and still meet every need I have.... but it doesn't stop me from wanting more. I would have to drop a lot more cash than I want in order to feel a serious WOW factor from the keyboard

I'm considering upgrading my almost 3 year old athlon 64 3200+, radeon 9800Pro AIW system with an X2 4800+ Toledo (2x 1mb L2 cache - big deal or negligable?). I saw a bundle available at newegg of this proc and a connect3D 3056 Radeon X1900XT 512MB for about 600$ + the video card has a 100$ rebate. I'm trying to decide whether to pull the trigger on this now or to hold out for a couple months and see if I can get better prices.

The X1600pro 512 is a terrible card tbh.

I've been itching to upgrade for years. I've had this Dell optiplex 1.8 p4, 1 gig pc2700 for 6 years now. Altho I'm buying a pretty nice 1,800 dollar E6600 set up within a week.

Ah the bug...keeps me up many long hours dredging through review sites and Online stores (especially after a huge increase in tech..). That bang/buck really kicks my butt =)

I have my XP1400 system that has gone through some minor revisions. The video card tends to stay somewhat updated (currently a x1600 pro..from a tnt2 when I built the system). I added 512 ddr 400 to make it a gig....but things are starting to chug. WoW even chugs at times....even though I can play Half life 2 without any real problem.

It just seemed that back then I could up my system (case, PSU, chip, MB, HD and ram) for under 500$. Im struggling to get my e6300 system under 600$ with just the PSU, MB, RAM and chip......

I would love to up to a e6300 system with 2 gigs of ddr. I have to figure out what MB I can use that wont break my bank but still allow me to use SLI or Xfire (although still debating on this...not sure if I would notice any difference from a TOP end card). Im now trying to figure out what power supply to use as well. How much wattage and such.

Yeah, so terrible in fact that my system plays BF2 @ 1280x1024 with all the options maxed and is silky smooth. Terrible card, don't get one. Who would want one? LOL

Can't ask for much more seeing as I paid like $130 shipped from Newegg.

Glad to see I am not the only one who doesn't have the upgrade bug. I will keep my current system at least two more years before I spend a dime on it.

I just keep getting more hard drive. I don't feel like upgrading because my system do everything that I need to do. I got a dell 400sc with 2.8c p4 chip, 1 gig of ram, a benq 1640, AIW 9600XT, and many hard drives. I don't play a lot of game nor do heavy video editing and such. It is hard to convince myself to upgrade when I don't have a reason too. The only thing I can do is buy more hard drives. I even have extra stick of RAM that I don't bother putting in.

Ive got it bad. I just ordered a bunch of stuff (C2D System) from NE to replace an AMD 3500+ (939 winchester) single core system. I would have kept going with the current system if the video card wasn't AGP (6800ultra). Unfortunately any video upgrades would require a new MB for PCIE.

I should have waited 2 months before buying my AMD system back when PCIE was comming out. Oh well, live & learn.

I see myself really psyched about virtulization and new storage techs like SAS. Just that theres no way with current products to get what I want into a home system at the price I'd like.

Since your system is 3 years old, you're going to need another motherboard if you even consider an X1900XT.

Considering that my 9800pro is 3 years old and can do close to what you said and is 'silky smooth', that IS pretty sad.

Yeah, the decision about which mobo to get is what kept me from buying the whole kit and kaboodle last night. I was looking for a RAID-5 capable board, since I've been doing software raid-5 through a windows xp hack for the last year or so, and want a hardware based solution without buying a 200-300 dollar pci card. I'm also wondering how bad an idea it is to stick with my current 1 gig of pc3200 ddr instead of going with whatever the newest stuff is available for a 939 mobo.

The upgrade bug hit me hard the other night.

But I went the cheap route and compromised with an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA and an E6400. I still get to use my 1 gig of Corsair XMS RAM and my AGP X850XT so this should be fun. :D

My overclocking abilities are limited to around 2.4GHz, but I didn't need to buy new RAM or a new videocard yet. $300 well spent if you ask me. :p

I've been chomping at the bit on an upgrade for a long time but this is the only one that really seemed to be worth the effort. My old Northwood 3.06 w/HT was a seriously underrated chip and ran fast and cool for me. I skipped the whole Prescott thing and was about to get an AMD X2 when I heard about the Conroe. Sometimes it pays to be patient. ;)

Heh, there is no motherboard in existence that has any form of hardware raid, they're all software based. For example, my IC7-G Motherboard has onboard raid, while it would appear it's hardware raid, it, in reality, it's software raid. The only way to get hardware Raid is to like you said, spend $400-$800 on a card considering that it's a Raid 5 card, which is considerably more demanding.

yeah, what I meant was that with a mobo-based raid array it wouldn't be tied to my existing os install the way it is now with my hacked dll's in windows xp. I've been wanting to re-install windows for a while now, but first I've got to back up everything on the raid array before I feel comfortable.

I also have a 9800 Pro. The X1600 replaced it. With the 9800 pro in BF2 I had to play at 800x600 to keep the frame rate decent. Thats with most of the options off. That IS sad.

The X1600 is light years ahead of a 9800 Pro.

Yup. Hit me hard tonight. Had my entire system build on Newegg. Came out to 1.7k or so. I just hit the "empty cart" button once I "finish" building it.

Finally regged an account. So, Hello!! :)

Itching BAD to upgrade, but two things are keeping me in check atm.

1. Intel nforce 590 sli...soon(tm)
2. The dreaded Vista and dx10 thingie..

I want the next build to last me a good while with minimal overhauling. And of course less wallet chaffing. ;)

What were your framerates in BF2 at 800X600? I can't imagine needing to play at 800X600 in that game, at 1280X1024, 2XAA, medium Texture and Terrain settings, High geometry and effects, filtering etc. settings, I average 40FPS;minimum being 25.

I just got a new system, but since I've been having nothing but problems getting the parts delivered and getting them to work, I'm a bit disgusted with computers in general. :p
