So which of these two vid cards are better since they're roughly the same price.
Better question, Which would you buy?

A retail Radeon8500 64mb ram 275/275mhz

or

Chaintech Geforce4 4200 64MB 250mhz core/444mhz memory

Defintely go TI4200, can OC great and great Nvidia drivers that you can always fall back against even though ATI is getting there act together.

Was just looking at pricewatch. In all fairness, the ATI 8500 is there for $83 and the Geforce4 4200 is there for $112. I would still go for the Ti 4200. Hmmm. Newegg.com has the chaintech for $123.

I did buy the Radeon 8500 (128). . . since there is more to (computer) life than high(er) frame rates. 😉

Which is "better"? Depends on your needs. The 4200 is a newer and a slightly faster card than the 8500 (although it is in the same league).

In general, the Ti4200 does offer higher performance than the 8500. However, there are a good number of situation in which the 8500 is quite competitive in terms of performance. As well, you lose next to no performance when enabling anisotropic filtering. Of course, FSAA is almost not an option on the 8500, but increasing the resolution has the same effect. So, if you like to use anisotropic filtering a lot (I know I do), then the Radeon 8500 may not be a bad idea for you. If you like to go high-res with FSAA, and are not worried about textures, then the Ti4200 is definitely for you. Whatever floats your boat.
