So which laptop do you own?

IBM R32.

I'm going to be selling a Toshiba 1005-s157 in a week or so if you are interested (1.06ghz/512mb/15gb). 😀

Toshiba s103 (celeron 1.5, 20gb, DVD, 256mb). Paid a total of $199 + tax after rebates for it which included two free Linksys wireless NICs.

Compaq Armada 7750MT

A little slow, but it does the job.

'spose I should post specs:

Pentium MMX 166
144 MB EDO RAM (16 MB on-board, 2 64 MB SODIMMs)
IBM Travelstar 3.2 GB hard drive
Hot-swap floppy drive and 8x CD-ROM
12" screen
S3 Aurora64+ video (2 MB VRAM, max res. 1024x768x16)
ESS Audiodrive 1688 sound (hardware SB compatibility)
Integrated 56k hardware modem (I guess this laptop predates winmodems)
2 Cardbus slots (both in use: USB 2.0 and 802.11b)
Standard compliment of ports: parallel, serial, monitor, PS/2, IRDA

IBM A31.

But I think the new IBM A40 might be very attractive. Especially if they have the P3-M 1.6 and the Radeon 9600.

I have:

Apple Powerbook
15.2" Display
G4 1Ghz
1GB RAM
60GB HD
Superdrive

and

Gateway 9300
PIII-600
15" Display
512MB RAM
30GB HD

I just orderd a dell Inspiron 600m

Pentium-M `1.3ghz
14.1" SXGA+ LCD
384MB of ram (DDR266)
40GB hard drive (It's a 5400RPM drive, so I'm guessing an IBM 40GNX (Hitachi now I guess 😉 ) )
24XCD-RW/DVD Combo drive
64MB ATI Radeon Mobilitiy 9000
Integrated wireless
Went with the extra battery for the drive bay too, because sometimes its a while before I can get to a AC outlet
weighs 5 pounds with the optical drive, and 4.8 without..very ncie 🙂

I currently own an Inspiron 8100, specs in my rigs (check the sig). Its on its way to death at the moment however, (thus the need for the 600m above 😉 )

Pick yourself up a used Thinkpad T20 from ebay.

In most cases, I'd never condone a used notebook purchase, but in the case of thinkpads, I think it's safe. Thinkpads are VERY durable and last forever.

Definatly email the seller asking about screen condition. I bought mine, and it looks like they used an alcohol based cleaner (Windex) to clean the LCD screen. That causes some yellowing of the lcd, so colors are a bit off. I don't notice it with DVDs , but on a pure white background it's fairly evident.

The T20 is a p3 700 with 128mb ram standard and a DVDRom. I get over two hours of battery life on mine (which is almost unheard of with a used laptop battery). That's with my 802.11b card in it and using the internet. It's thin, light, and looks pretty cool 🙂. Paid $600 shipped for mine, it has 384mb of ram.

It's great for DVDs/office apps/net surfing/etc.

If you want to replace your desktop, go with a newer model, but to suppliment an already good desktop system, I chose a less then top of the line notebook.

Toshiba Tecra 8100. Stay away from it. When it was new it was in the shop more than it was on my desk.
