Phoronix has posted pictures of the new, affordable(?) AMD Opteron A1100 development board: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ARM-Opteron-AMD-Snaps. I look forward to testing of this board. Steven Barrett's review suggests that the System Control Manager's included A5 processor provides out of band management which may eliminate the need for a BMC. http://anandtech.com/show/8362/amds-big-bet-on-arm-powered-servers-a1100-revealed/2. A BMC affects BoM costs and consumes energy so this offset may reduce some of the cost and efficiency issues with Seattle. For a home Linux server, the development kit may be attractive if the price is reasonable.

Here's hoping the AMD system can narrow the performance gap if not even possibly eclipse it in price/performance and performance / power.

I don't think Seattle will remotely close the gap in perf/watt, price/performance might be fine but that's to offset the higher TCO. It might be a cheap home server but not something you would consider for serious business.
 
Well, they did say they'd be launching the A1100 products at about this time on some slides from earlier this year. I guess developer boards count.

It's no surprise to me that a product like this would show up at the Linux Summit. Linux shops would be the ones best-able to adopt this kind of hardware.

Now wouldn't it be nice if the retention system was compatible with AM2/AM2+/AM3/AM3+/FM2/FM2+ so you could throw any ol heatsink on there you wanted? ARM overclocking!!!!! (lulz)
