So, when you upgraded to XP from win2k, what improvements did you actually use?

I recently upgraded my windows box from 2k to XP. So far the features in XP that I've actually had use for are IP over Firewire networking, Network time synchronization, and Clear Type. What new XP features do you actually use?

I used the System Restore feature. I forget what the problem was, but it was fairly big and annoying. After System Restore magically fixed my system I realized after two years with Win2K I had never needed such a feature so I went back to 2k.

If the comp is fast enough I will use the GUI and some other features, but as things stand on this comp I use services.msc to disable absolutely everything bar firewall (and essential services)

-- The improved start menu with recently used programs (I can't live without that)
-- Scanner/Printer wizard (automatically sets my photos up for printing. Built-in scanning utlity is great too IMHO. Quick and efficient when I want to scan in rebate/UPC/receipt stuff)
-- Driver support (support just about all the hardware I have w/o any additional drivers
-- Boots faster (not really that much of an issue since I rarely reboot anyway)
-- Task pane on the left-hand side of Control Panel/Windows Explorer Windows
-- Built-in Wi-Fi configuration. Great tool for me
-- System Restore has actually saved my butt a couple of times
-- Autoplay on my USB Card Reader and ThumbDrives
-- Stackable taskbar buttons

There are other little small things that are just in Windows XP that make the whole experience better for me. Whenever I use a Win2k machine now, I can't bare to do without things that I've just grown accustomed to having in Windows XP. That's the same way I felt when I went from 98 to 2k. And now after going from 2k to XP two years ago, I could NEVER go back.

I have XP at work and 2K at home. At work, I change all the look and feel of the GUI to emulate 2K. I see no point in upgrading my 2+ years old 2K install (yes, I've had the same system & OS from more than 2 years ago).

I have Win2k on my desktop and XP came installed on my laptop. I prefer Win2k which is why I haven't changed it on the desktop. IMO, XP doesn't have anything worth changing to.

I really like the built-in NTP synchronization, and I use ClearType all the time as well. I also have used System Restore, on occasion. 😀

There's no way to synch a Win2K box with a remote NTP server?

yes there is, net time command

Obvious Stupid Question: So what's the difference between that and XP's network time synchronization feature? Is it simply that XP's is integrated into the GUI?

In addition to these:
Clear Type
Remote Desktop
Files and Setting Transfer Wizard/User State Migration (saves your butt going from a workgroup to a domain)
Built in Camera Drivers/Wizard
Built-in CD burning
Better power management (hibernation)
Driver Rollback

I wouldnt use any of the so called features winXP had, I run win2K and am happy with it. Besides, doesn't winXP have that activiation crap when playing about with hardware?

I don't know of any off the top of my head. I did just reap the benefits such as faster startup and shutdowns though.

clear type, boot times, wifi, remote desktop, digicam wizard, picture viewer, built in zip and cd-rw support, better interface

Remote desktop is probably what I use the most, a great tool IMO.
