If it smells inedible it is.
All red meat browns when exposed to oxygen, that's not spoilage, bacterial growth is spoilage and that stinks.

I think you have the concept down, just leave it in long enough if you like your steak well done.
 
All these serious replies to a nonserious thread...I was meaning to imply that I thought brown=good to eat, no matter what, and was eating nasty cold raw meat straight out of the fridge😛
