So when will the HDTV Tivo's hit the stores? and will you buy one??

I need one that is a satellite receiver and does OTA.

Anyone going to make one of those anytime soon?

Thats what the HDTivo does. It has two OTA tuners and two Directv tuners. Places like Ultimate Electronics are reporting early May.

I got my preorder in...just need them to get their shipment.

What price did you pre-order at?

I would love one, but I'm not spending 1K, plus another $300 for the Tivo subscription (may be much less for us current Tivo subscribers) to have one.

It was $899.

Since you need to have Directv, you don't pay the 300 subscription, you pay the $4.99 monthly fee (per account.) I already have two Tivos, so this will not cost me any more monthly.

Granted $899 is alot of money to watch tv, but I was able to convince directv to give me a $250 credit for buying this, so what I ended up paying was in line with what the HD sat receivers were selling for back in late February when I pre-ordered. (Although they can be had for considerably less these days.)

I will want voom's its the only one that has a networking feature so you can record shows like a server and have the other ones iun your house stream shows over when you want to watch them.... plus they have the most HD by far (even with the 20 crap channels in HD)

i don't think that it'll be possible, or even practical to have an HDTV tivo, at least not true HDTV. someone posted a link to some HDTV DVD formats, one of which would be around 50gig for a typical movie, say 2 hours. most TIVOs boast 60 hours of playback, so that translates into about 1500gb. if they're introducted, HDTV tivos will hold only a couple of hours of playback. either that, or they'll have to reduce the quality, which somewhat defeats the purpose of having and HDTV tivo.

Sorry to slightly thread hijack...there is a thread on a HDTV pci tuner in hot deals but I had a few questions about HDTV tuners and the like.

I already have a HTPC which I was thinking about dropping a HDTV card into. What I want to do is pick up over the cable HDTV channels with my tuner card, display it on my TV with my ATI All in Wonder 8500, and perhaps record shows to my hard drive.

What hardware/software do I need to do this? I don't want a software based solution and a hardware decoder would be preferable since I only have a p4 2.4. Should I wait for the ATI card or are there some better alternatives out there?

you sure about that????

Samsung rep says that we will be seeing the HD Tivo's very soon. They are already in the system...I can look tomorrow and find out what the cost will be.

30 hours of HD or ~ 200 hours of SD.

Its real. Its really out there. It really works.
hmm, 30 hours on a 250gb drive? that doesn't translate accurately. have there been any reviews? because if the links i'm thinking about were accurate, then this particular device you're referencing is compressing the image. you'll get something that's better than a standard broadcast, but you won't be getting true HDTV.

well i'm only going by what i remember very vaguely. and i'm not saying that it's impossible, i'm just saying that the number of hours of recording (if it's true HDTV) will be pretty sh!tty because of the capacities of today's hard drives. what's the max now, 300gb? of course they could always string a couple into a single device, but then you're increasing size, heat, and weight. for some people, space on their entertainment shelf is very limited.

what you are saying is true. From what I know they are compressing the data. There are already DVR's out there that hold roughly 4 hours of HD signal and 10 hours of regular signal. The picture quality is still very good. I will snoop around tomorow and see if I cant get some model numbers, specs and prices.

isn't it something like 27gb for 2 hours of hd video? thats like 11hrs on a 300gb hd. course u can always record at lower bitrate..but wel that kinda defeats the purpose of hd. then again any hd is better then standard def. then again on a hd and artifacts are probably more obvious.

The signals that the DirectTivo are recording are already compressed (MPEG-2 by your local station, or Directv.) The Tivo only has to record the bitstream that it is sent, the provider does all the work compressing the signal.
