mmm... google shopping search finds 0 results...

I am guessing later this month. Very nice looking card... And just as I expected, they use the same type of 3rd party cooling that the 8800GT got... Those lower clocked high end cards always end with crap cooling (probably on purpose to prevent overclocking), it causes problems, and then an improved cooling version arrives.

mmm.. take note:

Every ASUS EAH4800 Series graphics card will also soon be equipped with the Glaciator Fansink

So, even the 512MB models will soon ship with the 3rd party cooling instead of that crap single slotter.

Yeah, I think 1GB is a bit overkill for a 4850. I'm guessing this batch will sell out very fast, mostly due to the improved cooler. The 4850 isn't powerful enough to play smoothly on those super high resolutions with tons of AA, so 512MB is plenty.

I dunno. 1 gig is pretty much...useless. We would see better net results from a wider bus, IMHO.

it will be plenty useful to anyone playing oblivion with the ultra texture mod... 700+ (i think it was 790) MB of vram used!

But since I don't... and can do without uber ultimate texture packs... well I still like the idea of 1GB of ram just because I am paranoid about ram and like things over engineered... but I wouldn't pay much for it.

I think 1GB on a 4870 will make more sense than having 1GB on a 4850. The 4870 performs at the level of GT260, with similar memory bandwidth, but the GT260 has 896MB of RAM while 4870 only has 512.

Right, but its far cheaper just to double up the memory

This is only going to be good for niche applications though (Oblivion texture mod like was previously mentioned), not much better than seeing 1GB (or even 512MB) on a real budget card that's really only good for 2D.

Otherwise yeah, the 4870 is the one that needs to see a bump to 1GB before the 4850 does seeing as how that should really help on the 30" LCDs.

Although even that niche is pretty small, however its far larger than one that could really use a 1GB 4850.
