i have a 3GS, and i was wondering what the process of selling this one, and buying the new one is. Do i have to do anything through ATT, or just wipe (factory settings?) the old one and sell it, and buy the new one?

just planning ahead for the future...i know ill wanna buy the new one somehow, i freakin love this thing (im not an apple guy at all either, which is weird haha).

Yea.. I did this with my 3G last year. Basically, wipe it, but do a low level wipe. I believe there is an option for that in iTunes, or on the phone itself. Then just make sure to keep your SIM and sell the phone.

Sorry.. misspoke.. Thought you could use iTunes, but went searching and looks like it'll only work on the iPhone itself.

It's under Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

One of the best reasons to buy an iPhone is the ridiculous resale value. In late 2009 I sold my 1st gen 4 gig for $200 bucks on Craigslist, I put the ad up and had sold it within 5 hours. If you re-up your contract you can basically stay with the latest models without a $$$ out of your pocket. On the flip I was able to get $60 for a WM 6.1 phone that I paid $299 for.

To answer your question though, a fun way would be to set a lock code and have it erase all the content when too many invalid passcode attempts have been made. No point in doing it over the erase all content option though.

restore the most current firmware image and load it up with videos to overwrite all bits of ram.

they make great gifts for toddlers/kids - just turn off wifi or airplane mode it.
