Its auto, and all my boxes except the laptop are 100mbit, though my server has integrated gig E which is connected to the gig upling port on my switch. Othermise, the remaining ports on my 2 switches are both full duplex 100mbit, and I have a 10mbit hub i use if i have lots of extra boxes here.

100 full duplex...but when I transfer files, I get like 9% utilization. :(

All wired machines are auto gigabit to a 5 port D-link gigabit switch. I have a straight cat5e cable from the switch to my a/b/g wireless router.

From computer to router, 100Mbps.
From the router to the cable modem, 10Mbps. Not like I'm going to go faster.

hah yes. file transfer between pc's, even 100mb/s is not enough. dead slow. i know latency between 100 and 1000mbit networks are different, with 1000 with lower latency. not sure about 10 and 100, but my guess is it should.

house is all hard wired so I take full advantage of 100Mbits. Stream stuff like tv eps and movies from my main pc to my laptop all the time.

Because I've never seen a Cable modem / DSL router (residential) that supported more then 10 meg.

You left out 1000 and 10000, and you probably should have included FDX options.

Anyway, 100 FDX here.

the wise man leaves it to autonegotiate.

One will not experience extremely poor performance if one does.

and its because you didn't leave it at auto that you do.
:)

-edit- this thread should get interesting when everybody sets their nics to auto and sees a 10x speed improvement

I'm not talking your LANS, I'm talking your WAN access link. Unless your paying out the ass for a custom setup, you will NOT have 1000.

1000 is starting to be reasonable, but 10k? cripes!
