So what's the trick to getting the official XBOX 360 Wireless adapter to do WPA2 AES?

I've upgraded to an N-capable access point, it's configured for WPA2 AES. It's running in G/N mode, all my laptops connect fine (G only at this point).

I've had no luck whatsoever getting the 360 to connect to the new AP, even when configured in G only WPA TKIP (like the old router). My laptops all connect fine no matter what mode the new AP is set to, but the 360 has yet to connect. When configured how I'd like it to be the 360 sees the new AP but when attempting to connect WPA2 is grayed out.

Re-connecting to the old router works fine, but I'd rather shut off the wireless on the old and just use the new.

The setup:

Old router: WRT54G running Tomato v25, configured for G only WPA TKIP, 64 character key
New AP: TrendNET TEW-637AP, hopefully configured for G/N WPA2 AES, 64-character key (for simplicity so I don't have to re-distribute a new key to everyone who visits)

From what I can find on the web WPA2 should be supported now, but I can't find anything that definitively says yes WPA2 AES should work (and XBOX phone support was useless...).

Am I missing anything?

From (australia site, but i guess it ought to be the same): http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/supp...es/wirelessadapter.htm

Near the bottom, click "Wireless Security Settings Rejected"

"Some copies of the instruction manual for the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter state that the adapter is compatible with the WPA2 security standard. At this time the adapter works only with WPA and WEP security."

EDIT: US site: http://support.xbox.com/suppor...NetworkingAdapter.aspx select troubleshooting, and you can see the same message.

Maybe the new N adapter will have it, it will be out soon.

The old one will only be dropping to $80 so you can still get a decent price for selling yours.

I'm not sure if there's any wireless bridges on the market that support WPA2. I'm not even sure if dd-wrt does while in wireless bridge mode. It'll support WPA AEP, but I don't think it supports WPA2.

Unless you are just dead set on using the Microsoft's adapter, you could just take the 54G and put it in bridge mode than hook the 360 to it. I've been using WPA-AES fine. The last time I checked there was an option for WPA/WPA2, but I haven't got around to seeing how it works.

I second this idea.

The end goal for this is to get MS's N adapter when it's released, so the 54G doesn't do me a lot of good as a bridge. Not to mention it's one more thing to cram into my already overloaded AV rack, more cables, etc. Much cleaner just to use the MS adapter. [EDIT]Oh and the N adapter is not a router... It's just an AP. So even if I wanted to I couldn't do that.[/EDIT]

Given how many people have reported success with WPA2 I'll give it another shot tonight. Since I couldn't connect to the new AP even when it was in WPA TKIP mode I may have something else wrong.

After another hour and a half it's not WPA2 that's killing me, it's this access point. I've dropped it all the way to no security at all and the 360 still won't connect. All laptops + PS3 work fine no matter what I set it to but the 360 won't connect at all.

XBOX support literally read me a list of every "compatible" bridge and router & said sorry we can't help you, TrendNET support said call XBOX support and have them open up ports for you... Never mind that I'm not even making the initial connection to the AP.

I guess I'm just going to be stuck running two AP's at least until the N adapter comes out, maybe that will work.

I've got two WRT54G routers running as WPA2 AES wireless bridges using DD-WRT.

Yup tomato does do WPA2 AES. As well as WPA2 Enterprise.

Also go in the advanced settings under wireless and set the transmit power to 70. I get excellent signals all the time. Been running it at 70 for a year. Got the info from a lifehacker.com article.

I used two apple airport extreames. One at my router, and one at my TV. The are linked via wireless-N (and the second one extends the wireless range to my downstairs). Then all my devices at my TV are plugged into that router. Everything works. Everything nice and WPA2.

Ended up fixing it late last night by renaming the new AP to a new name the 360 had never seen before. I was then able to connect (with no security). I named it back to what I wanted it, set the security back where I wanted and everything works now.

For the record the 360 would NOT see the AP when set to WPA2 only, but when set to WPA/WPA2 AES it connects and functions fine (in WPA mode, whereas the PS3 will do WPA2).

All is well for the moment, now if the official N adapter brings WPA2 support I can turn of WPA and I will be completely satisfied.

Maybe 1.26 will fix this? It's in beta now.
