my computer still sound like a refrigiator.

how to kill the other noise?

i have no idea where this noise is coming from.

my comp has 3 segate bacurada v and iv harddrives and one samsung 20gb harddrive.

What kind of video card/northbridge cooling is there? Sometimes it's those little fans making all the noise. What does the noise sound like? If it sounds like a fridge I have to ask if it's a phase-change cooling unit like a promy or something :).

Yeah, like Dman877 said, its probably the video card hsf or the mobo fan. Those little fans are incredibly loud for how small they are. How many case fans do you have? I'm trying to build a 'silent' pc and have quickly found that its going to be farily pricey to get what I want.

Open up your case up and see what the curlprit is. If you cant instantly tell by just putting your ear up to them, try stopping the fans individually and see if you can tell a difference (just take care not to damage anything).

Just note that when you silence a component (like your hsf for example) something else always seems to become loud and start to nag at you again.

acoustipack and acoustifeet should help...
Also seal out the places it seems to be coming from where it shouldn't (cd-rom area).

PC's tend to be as loud as their loudest component, which in many cases is the video card if you have worked on the other stuff. You can get fanless video cards now days, such as GeForce 6800's and GeForce 6600's. If you are careful you can also remove the video card, peel back the sticker for the video card fan, and lubricate the fan bearing with a drop of sewing machine oil- this will only work for a little while because ultimately these cheap fans just go back to being whiney.

Also, Nexus case fans are great. The best quiet fan you can buy. Also, if you have an AMD 64 processor you can run Cool 'n' Quiet and this will automaticly adjust the fan speed based on the core temperature.

steps:
1) passively cool your chipset (they don't get hot enough to not warrant a decent heatsink)
2) passively cool your video card (check xoxide or some other mod vendor. you might want to look into heatpipe technology)
3) set zalman CPU HSF to low or "quiet mode" for maximum stealth
4) get rubber or plastic washers. place them between casefan and case material
5) ^ same with HDDs

then you should be set

don't bother with any dynamat or acoustimat stuff or rubber feet, blah blah blah. if you stop the noise at it's source, you won't need any insulating material. it's a scam to get kiddies to fall for before they even attmept to silence their computer correctly. only get insulating material if you sileneced your COMPONENTS first. and then onyl get the rubber sheets. none of that styrofoam sheet crap

The forums at www.SilentPCReview.com might help.

Also, a geforce3 is pretty slow, you should be able to replace it with a card that has no fan, just a heatsink.

For $58 at newegg.com you can get an Asus geforce 6200 (N82E16814121542) or several other fanless ones for under $70. (You can also buy faster heatsink and heatpipe cooled cards, but they cost much more)

Note: the 6200 might not work if you are still using Win98 / ME instead of 2000 or XP.

What case do you have? Does it have a fan in the top? The 'blow-hole' idea is terrible for those wanting a quiet machine.
