So I can register a domain through yahoo for $4.95 a year. So how do I get my website on there? They want to charge $12 per month for web features but why can't I just host it myself or use a cheaper host service?

Don't get hosting trough them. Search here in OT for some good Rossman reccomendations.

And yes, you can also host it yourself if you have the ability/connection speed. When you get your domain name, you'll have to specify the servers to redirect your site to. You can *park* it there until you get your hosting setup.

DeviousTrap's Webhosting service. I've used it a few times, and reccomend it to friends.
(Also, check out other user's experiences with it, from the forums. Good prices as well.)

I guess that's how they lure you with a cheaper registration fee... by tying you into a hosting plan too. Typically it's $8 per year or thereabout for domain names then you get your own hosting.

It can work out in the end... depends on what you need as a webhost. Where's Yahoo's link ? I'm just curious as to how they're competing.

I would not register a domain with Yahoo!

1) Register a domain with NameCheap.com or GoDaddy.com
2) Web hosts are available as cheap as $30/yr up to $300/mo.
It all depends on how much disk space/bandwidth you need and if you're willing to pay for quality.

What's your budget for web hosting?

The cheaper the better probably. I don't use a lot of bandwidth as I basically use it to put my digital pictures up for my family and friends to see (I use Gallery). I'd also super cheap website b/c I want a cool name, even though I won't put much on it....I just want the rights to the domain name initially.

That does me no good. If you only care about price go with e-rice.net but there are better web hosts with better software for more $.

So I need a solid $$$ not a range.

Just make sure to register with namecheap or godaddy and you will own the domain.

You can switch web hosts whenever you want, no problem.
