ive seen several threads where people mention the power draw from furmark can damage newer Nvidia cards. (same with OCCT). is there anything else that is safe that can find errors as quickly as fur mark?

As far as I know, both nVidia and AMD artificially limit their cards in benchmarks like FurMark. So you should not need to worry about damaging the card.

EVGA Overclock X runs the same type of tests as furmark and reports artifacts, temps, load etc.

I like to use Heaven running in windowed mode to test for stability. Mining bitcoins works ok as well. With Heaven I leave it in a 1280x1024 window with maxed out AA and extreme tesselation. Generally the driver will just crash out if your overclock is too high. What I like to do is read some reviews of similar GPUs and try to match their overclock. Then I just work in 25mhz increments from there going up or down depending on stability.
