Same as it ever was. Lots of poppies growing to fund the effort of terrorists against the US and others.

The Taliban continues to re-assert itself in every district outside of Kabul. "Back in Black" tour a huge success. Meanwhile back in Iraq.................

The US has moved more troops in country to re-enforce the border region with Pakistan. The hope is to squeeze Al Qaeda and Taliban forces between the US and Afghan forces on one side and Pakistanis on the other.

Well, its only been with the recent assassinations attempts on beloved patriot President that they've gotten serious about Al Qaeda and are now closing the area down. Before we would always stop at the border and no one on the other side to catch them.

As for news from Afghanistan, on CBS news Sunday, they talked about the groundbreaking for a new Hyatt Hotel in Afghanistan. This signals the first of what they hope to be many more private foreign investment into Afghanistan, hopefully that will bring them new jobs and bring them out of poverty so they can manage themselves, instead of relying on foreign gov aid. There was recently a busness convention attended by foreign investors about possibilities in doing business in Afghanistan. Hopefully there will be more good news like that.

That CBS segment also showed an opening of a university and lots of roads being constructed.

I just spoke with a Staff Sergeant on his way back to Afghanistan. He says troop levels are very "thin" in Afghanistan. But, he does think they've got OBL and AQ mostly contained in the NE part of the country. (I didn't ask him why so many AQ are showing up in Iraq, since he's a relative, and serving. Only softballs.... :) )
