From your question I get the feeling that MrHelpful's reponse, though adequate, probably provokes more questions than it answers. DDR RAM is a new type of memory that is Double Data Rate instead of Single Data Rate like the old RAM. It has a new configuration so that it can read and write in the same cycle which makes it faster and also makes it incompatible with motherboards that have the old RAM. There are some motherboards that have slots for either, but the two types cannot be used at the same time. Old RAM cannot be used with the new DDR motherboards either. I hope this answers your question and gives a little background so you aren't just more confused. No offense MrHelpful. Just saw your last post. The DDR boards do not cost much more, but of the chipsets currently available none provide much performance advantage over the VIA KT133A chipset (which is the best SDR RAM chipset currently available for AMD processors) except for the AMD 760 chipset which gives about a 10% performance advantage over the KT133A.

It will eventually give much better performance, but now yet. I dont think the palomino would give as good as possible performance either. DDR Ram does not cost any more than regular SDRam if you go to prices according to crucial.com. Crucial is probably the best ddr memory right now also. But basically what NelsonMuntz said about it. I'm sure more people will respond.

I just had to make this decision and went with DDR mostly because going with SDR wasn't really going to save me much money considering it's now pretty much dead-ended. The DDR memory is actually a little bit cheaper and the motherboards aren't too much more. I had reservations over the stability of DDR mobos, as well as the 2 DIMM slots on almost all of them, but in the end I got over it.
