Cyrix = purchased by VIA. See: VIA C3 series, VIA EPIA mainboards/CPU combos
Transmeta = Still around, I think.

Packard Bell = Went to online-only sales, I think they're still around but DEAD.

Transmeta just sold off their processor line I believe, but they're still around...for how long is the question

Packard Bell is now gone from the states but still around in Europe. (says wikipedia)

Transmeta just announced that it was closing it's doors ~1 week ago

PB still sells in Europe, IIRC.

Too bad -- it was their CPUs that finally got intel to start caring about offering very low power versions of their CPUs. Without them intel might never have gone Bananias.

Then you'd win.

Dig through articles of the time and you'll see very low power mobile P3s were announced after and in response to Transmeta CPUs.

intel sometimes follows instead of leading, as when they adopted AMD's 64-bit extensions to x86.

Gah...I was thinking more on terms of the market demanding it from Intel.
sorry dave

No problem, but you're right that they didn't do it to compete with transmeta so much as that transmeta showed them that the market existed.

intel saw the buzz transmeta was causing and realized they could charge a premium for chips just by adjusting their sorter/tester machines to select for low voltage instead of for high speed.

And as laptops continued to make up more and more of total sales that almost certainly led them into greenlighting (or upping the urgency of) the P-M development.

Not that I have first-hand knowledge, I'm just going by what I've read.
