So...what *would* happen if you fired a gun on the moon?

If it fired, I think it would go faster due to less air resistance and farther due to less gravity. I don't know if it would fire though.

wouldn't fire. No oxygen.

If there was some atmosphere contained in the cartridge (as the comic suggested), the pressure would just leak out around the bullet while the cartridge was still in the clip. I it didn't, it would just push the bullet out of the cartridge and then it would be gone.

Also, assuming the air int he catridge didn't do that, you still wouldn't have enough air to combust all your powder, so the bullet would leave the barrel at something like 1 m/s.

Gunpowder contains oxidizers, which makes it semi-possibleto fire in an oxygen-free environment. Not sure about he primers, but I think so. I suspect that there would be other major issues though.

It wouldn't be too hard to rig up something to release a puff of oxygen while you're firing... It would go faster because there's less resistance, and it would go further because there's no air resistance and less gravity pulling it downward.

You can fire guns marginally underwater (or at least that's what Lethal Weapon 2 told me). The gunpowder brings it's own oxygen to the party.

Yeah, and those movies are reliable sources of all types of information. ;)

Sound waves can travel in space (or at least that's what Star Wars told me)!

I've seen that you can fire a gun underwater, the bullet loses its momentum after 1 meter or so.

It'll fire, but it won't go, "faster." It will just not decelerate as rapidly. Also whoever said that primer has an oxidizer aleady in it is correct. The hammer will hit the end of the hammer, the fuel will ignite, the shell will expand, and the rapidly expanding gas will shoot the bullet out of the gun. :p

yep. It will fire and leave the barrel with the same velocity (roughly) as it would on earth. The reason why gun powder explodes is the rapid chemical change from solid to gas (explosion). I forget the chemical in gunpowder (potassium chloride?) that has all the oxygen.

So once it leaves the barrel it will go farther due to less gravity (won't drop as much) and maintain velocity (less resistance)

The rest of you; if you don't know, don't make something up. Sheesh.

Yeah, I was trying to say the same thing, Spidey put it better than I did.

It will cause an inexplicable chain reaction which will cause the Sun to implode and suck everything except the fired bullet into the ensuing black hole. Try it if you don't believe me. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

You couldn't try it anyway though. We've never been to the moon so we certainly can't go back to try this out. The government made the moon landing up. In fact, there is no moon. It does not exist. Sheep.
