So what version of Vista do you guys think you'll get?

Well, we had a meeting with MS and they gave us some insight on what versions of Vista will be released, and what will be included in each. For the people not familiar with the versions, here is a basic overview (from what I can remember):

Home versions:
1. Vista Home Basic: Pretty much what it is, basic. Just the regular OS with Media Center component missing and I believe it does not include the new Windows interface called "Windows Aero."

2. Vista Home Premium: Everything included in Basic, but also adds Windows Aero, includes the new Windows Media Center, and better search capabilities.

3. Vista Ultimate: Includes everything from the Home versions AND the business versions.

Business versions:
1. Vista Business: Basic business version, but some GREAT improvemenst over XP. One being, dynamic HAL switching. VERY important when creating a single image, now that HyperThreading and dual core are becoming common place. There are otehr improvements, but this was a biggie for me. (Just for the record, I do dynamic HAL switching on XP, but I had to write a script for it. 😉)

2. Vista Enterprise: Includes everything in business but also adds Virtual PC and a higher level of support.

That's pretty much everything in a nutshell. I'm going for Ultimate, but we'll see how much it costs. What version are you guys more interested in?

Vista Ultimate, but that's because I've got a couple of connections at MS, so I can get them out of the employee store. 🙂

I want to see the product support lifecycle chart first. Ultimate, is it in the business class with 5 years of Extended, or is it in the home-user class with no Extended phase?

Also, IIRC Enterprise includes full-volume encryption as another attraction for some situations.

Enterprise requires a volume license agreement, so there won't be many individuals running that...legally.

I'll be running whatever I can get from my university's software store for $11. Hopefully, they'll have either Enterprise or Ultimate, but it's hard to tell at this point.

Until now I had them all, starting once with the pre-Windows MS-DOS 2.11 (and a 4MB Hercules color graphic card, which was twice the price of the entire PC and much more expensive than today's high end GPUs - around $ 2500) going to Windows 3.11, 95, 98SE, ME, 2000, 2003 Server, XP Pro and Home and MCE 2005, including a list of pre-betas and betas of Longhorn and Vista.

I'll probably do it same as with the XP, 2 different versions on 2 PCs.
Perhaps Home Premium and Ultimate (and an illegal, cracked copy of the Enterprise:laugh:

Like ProviaFan, I'll most likely get whatever my university has available at the bookstore. If it's something crappy like Home Basic, I'll probably utilize a Microsoft connection I have and get Ultimate Retail from her, though obviously that will cost me much more. But the university usually has the high-end version of everything, so we'll see.

I'll just stick with Windows XP. It is already a good OS and takes up significnatly less system resources.

WOW, I can't believe so many people have chimed in. I didn't think anyone visited the OS forum. 🙂

Like I said, I would really like to see the pricing for all these versions.

Definately Ultimate at the very least. I am impressed with the current writeups regarding Bitlocking (much like Process Guard) in Vista.

Hell, the only thing missing is a built-in Anti-Virus, but you can obtain that with extra online services from M$ I'm sure.

Whatever comes in our volume licensing packs, and not untill at least the first SP. We didn't start using XP untill after SP2, so we will probably do that with Vista also.

At home, I plan to continue to use XP until I'm completely switched over to linux.

Same here. My Uncle works for Microsoft and can get me just about any of their products for much less than what one would normally pay.

none, i am real happy with my retail version of XP that i have nlited to include service pack 2 and removed all the junk MS insists we need
