well i just got zone alarm, cuz im gettin dsl soon. but i happen to be watching the alert logs, and the same dude just tried to get into my computer 4 times (i am assuming it is someone) and yea, he woulda had lots of fun in my computer (at about 200 bits per second!!!!!) i connect at 28.8k for dial up lol.

but here for fun u guys.

source ip

68.21.7.210:2720 (i got 2 from here, and 2 from :2719)

source dns was

adsl-68-21-7-210.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net

so what exactly could that be?

zone alarm caled them tcp (flags::s) i have a few other tcp flags, but no one else has hit me 4 times like that. so what could they b doing, or trying to do? just wondering.

If it's just two pops on two ports, it looks like a ping and not an attack or "hack". There's a worm going around and although I don't know which port it targets, you're going to have to expect stuff like that all the time, pings from other home computers here and there.

Script kiddies.

You can tracert back to his ip address and see who it is.
Better yet get neo trace or visual route.

You could also bomb him with pings.

Or you could just get a router and not even let the guy in.

How would traceroute help him "see who it is?" He already has ip/host, and knows that the person is on ameritech dsl in chicago.

You could also bomb him with pings.
And this would accomplish what?

The guy never GOT in. Notice the "i just got zone alarm .. i happen to be watching the alert logs"? Zone alarm is a firewall, remember? ;)

and how would a router help on dial-up? JW.

pings would do jack sh!t, and just slow me down, cuz 28.8k dial really isnt fun.

i get tons of freaking hits everyday.

I didn't see you were on dial up, sorry.

As for "letting him in", well if you were on broadband and had a router then your zone alarm wouldn't be popping up. The router would/could be block them.

As for pinging him repeatedly? Well if he had zone alarm, you'd be driving him nuts. LOL

Other than that just, let zone alarm catch it or set it to not pop up but block him anyway. Trouble is some of these guys use/rotate IP address.

Most of these are harmless port scans anyway...then again if the try to connect you never know. Have you run a good trojan detector on you're computer?

Seriously - stop wasting you time worrying about blocking, retaliating, etc, it is a WASTE OF YOUR TIME. Just ignore it.

True, but obviously he was taken back when he found out someone was scanning him. This is what happens when you install something like zone alarm. Kind of drives you crazy at first.
OTOH, I've had trojans take control of a computer...this is more prevalent than people think.

I never used any virus protection when I used windows, and I never got a single virus or trojan. It's 99% dependent on the USER, not the software, or internet "hackers," or anything else.

He has zone alarm installed, he can click the little checkbox to tell it to stfu, and he can be on his merry little way, with nothing to worry about.

How did you know unless you ran a virus scanner?

OTOH, you must have been very careful with e-mail, never DLed from a Kaaza type service or visited a no-no site. <G> When did you convert to Linux (assuming you did?)
From reading your posts, you're not the average computer user either. You're an very advanced computer user.

I ran some online virus scanner a couple times.

OTOH, you must have been very careful with e-mail,
I used yahoo webmail, and even outlook express for a while I think, but I never really got any viruses/etc through mail. (even now, that's only happened to me a handful of times)

Yeah, I did, but I just used common sense. Mp3's are safe, movies are safe, softare is NOT safe, but whenever I downloaded software, I would check it out. Is the filesize realistic? Are there lots of people with this same exact file of the same exact size? etc. Those definitely don't eliminate your chances of getting a virus, so I guess I was a little lucky, but I think I was much more cautious than most people.

or visited a no-no site.
Porn websites are generally pretty worthless IMO (unless you pay money, which I'm not willing to do)

Like.. fall/winter of 2001/2002.

Relative to "most" people, sure. Just depends on who you want to compare me to.
