So what temp. is my CPU running??

I finally got a Thermalright XP-120 for the setup in my signature, but I'm getting strange differences in temperature reporting. Asus Probe has me idling at 41C, while MBM5 has me idling at 27C. That's quite a big difference, so which one should I trust?

The stock AMD heatsink with some weird generic thermal paste had me idling at 37C according to Asus Probe, and my load with either cooling solution doesn't go above 45C according to the Probe. I really wanted to overclock this sucker since I was able to get my HTT pretty high on this A8V Deluxe, but I don't even know if I'm getting accurate temp readouts.

I checked the seating of the heatsink and I'm pretty sure it's fine. I think I'm going to take it off again though and tape one of my flat temp gauges to the side of the processor. Will that give me fairly accurate results?

Sorry - I'm a newb at AMD overclocking 😉

You shouldn't take the heatsink off and then put it back on after it has spread the AS5 out. That creates air bubbles, which lower your temps.

What I'd try doing is take off the heatsink and completely clean off all AS5. Then put a very small blob in the middle of your CPU and attack the heatsink in one try (meaning you don't lift it up after it has touched the AS5).

I would trust MBM more than Asus Probe, but those idle temps are quite low. Try uninstalling Asus Probe and see if your temps with MBM change. Probe might be messing with MBM somehow.

The ASUS Probe would be the one reporting the correct CPU temp, since it takes the temp readings from the BIOS anyway, and I could be wrong, but MBM5 motherboard support hasn't been updated for quite a while.

They both take the temps directly from the motherboard. MBM hasn't been updated in a long time, but it still lists the A8V Deluxe as a supported motherboard, so it must be configured for that board.
