So what should I do with this Ipaq?

I've got a good working Ipaq 3635 with the sleeves for both CF and PCMCIA.

I also have a Belkin Bluetooth CF card in a PCMCIA sleeve.

Now, I'd never carry this Ipaq around as a PDA, my phone does all that I need it to on that front. I don't want to sell it either as I'd like to make a fun project out of this.

I do also have a motorala bluetooth headset, which I never use I might add since I think they're a bit pretentious looking. I was wondering if there's a way to get even nerdier and lazier and rig the headset to the ipaq via blutooth for voice commands of a HT remote program.

Like:

"Setup Xbox 360"......which would enable a macro for that.

Probably dreaming on that one, but who knows.

Anyone here ever use an old Ipaq or PDA for this?

Thanks.

I didn't really think of that but a handheld GPS unit would be nice for when we ride 4 wheelers and such. Don't really need it in the car, I'm setting up a car PC for that.

my roommate is converting an old palm pilot into a remote for our MythTV box. He got an IR transmitter that fits into it, and the HTPC has an IR reciever. It's not all the way there and I think he may have forgotten about it, but it's a good idea.

I'm pretty sure you can do it, but usually through IR, not Bluetooth. Not sure if you can get a receiver that'd work right with it, but it's certainly worth a shot, USB BT adapters are cheap.

I SO recognize myself in this statement. 😱

Touchscreen remote would be a sweet highly doable project.

Just think if you had a PC with all of your CDs and DVDs copied over, and could just select a track or movie without having to get up.

The only thing left to do would be to buy a mini fridge or find a girlfriend who likes a dominant male so you don't have to get yourself a beer.

I'm certain it would be POSSIBLE to do the headset thing, but how annoying would it be to have to wear a headset while trying to relax, or to have to talk louder than a movie to get your voice to pick up when you have to take a whiz?

FWIW in my past experience the IR signal is so week in most standard Ipaqs that it won't even reach a TV when sitting in on a couch maybe 5 to 10 feet away.

There are specific models of the Ipaq however that have a beefed up IR transmitter that do work nicely but those are also the models that come out of the box with remote control functions.

YMMV

My 3950 come with a remote app that I programmed to control my MCE box. It works OK, but the remote interface is sluggish sometimes. I think I used it maybe 3 times, it was really nothing more then a novelty to me; it doesn't fit well in my hand to use as a remote, unless you use two hands, and who wants a two-handed remote?

yeah, I figured IR from the Ipaq to the HTPC and/or TV. The bluetooth idea was for a voice command interface between the Ipaq and me with a bluetooth headset.
