Pentium Pro 200mhz Intel: ($600.00)(1996)
K62-400 AMD: ($175.00)(1998)
Thunderbird 750mhz AMD: (~$200.00)(Dec. 2000) oc'd to 845mhz
Thunderbird 1100mhz AMD: (~$200.00)(April 2001) oc'd to 1200mhz
Thunderbird 1400mhz AMD: (~200.00)(Oct. 2001) oc'd to 1.533ghz
Northwood 1800mhz Intel: ($200.00)(Feb. 2002) oc'd to 2.52ghz and damaged due to 1.83v of core...
Northwood 1600mhz Intel: ($160.00)(June 2002) oc'd to 2.74ghz, runs today and sold
Northwood 2400mhz Intel: ($164.00)(March 2003) oc'd to 3.33ghz w/ 370mhz ddr or 3.24ghz w/ 450mhz ddr...

See a pattern of ocing and never spending more then $200.00 for a cpu....

I can go all the way back to when my dad first bought an APPLE II in 1977 that cost $3000! and had about 16k of memory. I can't remember the type of CPU it had but I'm sure it's probably the same as my son's calculator. He then bought an APPLE II+ that had 48k of ram and was that thing fast! He later graduated to an APPLE IIGS that had like 1MB of ram and 1024 colors! That cost about $2500 and I can remember it like yesterday. Anyway, let me list the more "current" CPU's:

Intel 386DX 33MHz $2500 1991?
Intel Pentium 150 MHz $800 1995
Intel Pentium Pro 200MHz $2700 1997
Intel Pentium 200MHz MMX upgrade chip $299 1997
Intel Celeron 300A $175 1998
AMD Athlon 1.33MHz $180 2001
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ $93 2003

Those thousand dollar prices were of course the whole computer package, not just the chip.

Fairchild F8 1 Mhz (Mostek version)
Alpha Micro AM100 1MHz? (A DEC PDP11 work-alike, Western Digital chips. Yes, same WD, way before they made HDs.)
Zilog Z80 4 Mhz (Intel 8080 work alike)
Intel 8086 10MHz

IBM PC era:
NEC 8086 10 MHz (An Intel 8086 knock off. I think it was NEC.)
Intel 80386SX 16 MHz
IBM 486SLC2 50 (IBM version of a 486)
AMD 486DX4 100
Cyrix 6x86 133MHz
IBM 6x86L 150MHz
Cyrix 6x86MX 200MHz
Cyrix MII 233MHz
IDT Winchip 200MHz
Intel Celeron 300 (450 OC)
AMD K6-III 400
Intel Celeron 366 (550 OC)
AMD Athlon 800MHz (970 OC)
Intel Celeron 566MHz (850 OC)
AMD K6-2+ 450 (550 OC)
AMD Athlon 1400MHz
AMD Athlon 1600+ (2070 OC)

The most I ever paid for a CPU (by itself) was $170, I think. And that was probably the IBM 6x86L.

The Apple ][s and the Commodore 64 had 6502 processors - blazing fast for those days. I also started with a $3000 Apple ][ (with dual 5 1/4" floppy drives and the huge 48K of RAM). Since then:

Cyrix PR200
K6-II 400
Celeron 300 at 450 (no cache model)
Celeron 533 at 800
Athlon 800 at 850 (Slot A)
Pentium III 750 at 950
Athlon 1700+ at 1900+
Athlon 1600+ at 2000+

Seems like it's time to move to 3GHz.

486 sx 33mhz w/turbo button
PIII 733
P4 1.6 (socket 423)
AMD Athlon XP2100+ (oc'd to 2.2ghz)

I'm 24, and yes, the C-64 was mine. My dad had his own. :D
Anyone else remember copying game programs manually out of computer magazines, and saving them to tape drives, because hard drives had not been invented for consumers. Ahhh... Memories... Having to rewind a tape, press play, and tell the computer to load... *sniffle*;)

Duron 1.2Ghz 200mhz DDR FSB
Athlon "Thunderbird" 1.33Ghz 266 DDR FSB

66mhz faster FSB and 128kb more of L2 cache make ALL the difference!! And also having the L1 bridges FACTORY UNLOCKED helps!
