So what is your definition of dating?

When a couple says they are dating, would you consider them just casually seeing each other or it can also mean that they are in a serious committed relationship. I explained that the term encompasses it all from "seeing each other" up to the point of the couple getting engaged/married. That person said it means just seeing each other.

What's your general take on it?

It's when both parties decide to have a relationship beyond friendship or fuck-buddies. The inbetween part is just seeing each other, or friends with benefits depending on what is going on. 😎

What i want to know is what his friend call the part between "seeing each other" and getting engaged

I don't realy use the term 'dating' so much. I see it as friends->seeing each other->relationship

I suppose dating could encompase the last two.

I'd save the term "dating" for when two people are involved in a (at least) semi-committed relationship. Once two people are dating, it's no longer ok for them to try and get it on with other people (unless that's just what they're into and all, ya know).

Before dating, I'd use the term "talking" or "seeing" each other. At that point, I wouldn't hold it against a person if they were also talking to someone else. It's not what I would do, but everything is still in the early phases, and so it's basically a trial period.
