My TSP (401k for Fed Gov workers) is up a little over 30%

I have 60% in International, 20% in small cap, and 20% in common stock.

So how is everybody else doing?

Personal Rate of Return from 01/01/2009 to 11/20/2009 is 47.9%

last year was -51% so I've basically recovered from last year.

It's up significantly on the year, but if you factor in the hit it took when the market tanked, it is just getting back to even.

not so. losing 51% of 100 bucks leaves you with 49. gaining 48% on 49 bucks is only 72 bucks. you need to gain 100ish percent to get back to even.

good point.

I came to that realization last year that I was going to need a hell of an increase % wise to get back to even, but surprisingly it has happened. Not sure what the exact numbers are though.

All I know is that in 3 years of working full time I have contributed 31019 to my 401K, and there is currently 31250 in my account, so it's basically no gain over the last 3 years.

Well, it's basically free money (at least in my case). I put in 5% of my salary, and my employer matches with 10% of my salary, so even if my 401K was down 60% over it's entire life, I would still make out with my 5% contribution + a little more.

Heh, I have been putting money into a 401k since 1995 and at one point in March, I was down 30K for the entire life of the 401k. Talk about sad. At that point, it was renamed a 201k and was on its way to a 101k. :(

OP, I'm up 30% or so this year. Still many thousands of dollars below where I was at the peak of 2007.

My rollover IRA is showing 40-60% returns for the year (it varies on the mutual fund), which seem impressive until I realize that I'm still down 15% from when I started this IRA back in March of 2009. Grr.

Hey now... you could always put your 401K money in a money market and government bond funds, and earn 3% interest for the rest of your life. It's not a GOOD investment idea, but it is an available option.

20.4% this year. I've stopped contributing for the balance of the year however, in order to hopefully pay off a few bills and save $ for a house.

I guess not much but because this is only my 2nd year investing into my 401k and I'm putting so much more than I did last year that my investment ROI isn't that great for the year. It's like 17% or so.

Fine now. Shameful watching kids' education fund, though, still struggling badly.

I think this market has recovered too fast too much but I'm not confident in that enough to do anything baout it.

Yeah, I'm around the same. Been down 40-50% over the previous year, so coming back to that is awesome.

I'm now getting into $ amounts that are meaningful :p It should hit the next major milestone in 2010.

Up 25%. It never went down over the last couple years, just slowed in growth a bit.

Up to 28.52% rate of return. Balance is back up from the 3 grand dip it took last year. Pretty small balance.
