So what IS the problem?

I just built my first ever system (sort of). It's not posting, and I suspect the PSU may be my problem. My MB (abit IP35v link) takes a 4-pin ATX_12V, but my power supply (Silverstone ST50F link) has an 8-pin ATX_12V. Someone on Newegg who purchased the same PSU said he got his to work by just plugging in 4 of the 8 pins. I tried this, though I'm not sure which 4 to use. Also, there are only 4 that I can use since a transistor gets in the way if I try to use the other 4.

I haven't ruled out anything else as the reason I'm not posting. Can I work with what I have? Can I get some kind of adapter? Or do I just need to buy another PSU?

I posted this in the power supply forum also, but I figured it'd get more traffic here.

Thanks!

The 4pin design on mobo is foolproof. You can plug it in only one way.

If you can fit both halves of 8 pin, plug in one that you can plug in (one without which transistor in the way).

You can use either of half, so plug in any half.

I was hoping you can "break" the 8 pin in two 4 pin (both 4 pin are identical, thus you can use either 4).

My PSU came with two 4pin plugs and mobo that required 8 pins, so I just plugged them both in and it works well.

Thanks. The good news is that I don't have to buy a new power supply. The bad news is that there is probably something else wrong with my build. :frown:

Probably should be a different topic, but I'll ask anyway. The LED on my mobo is lighting up, but I'm not getting a beep. I also don't have a monitor yet, because my mobo has no on-board video, and I haven't installed my graphics card yet (it will be on my front porch when I get home from work today). This is mostly wishful thinking, but is it possible that the a board with no video won't post until it has a video card plugged in?

If that isn't the probably, I'm kinda worried now. Having to buy another power supply would have sucked, but at least it's easy.:)

I changed the topic so it would make more sense for the new question, although I guess it's pretty vague now.

Your basing your non post to nothing but PC speaker sound? Do yourself a FAVOR... Wait till you have a full machine.. My last build didnt post (I was able to WATCH it on my monitor ) and it was because I didnt plug my PSU into the video card..
So in effect IMO it was not posting because there was no video card.. I suspect you are in the same boat with no "on board" or "no card".. Patience is KEY when building...

Seems you were right. I got home and stuck the 8800GT in and everything seems fine now. Still no beeping though. I don't recall seeing/connecting a case speaker. Maybe mine doesn't even have one. Anyway, installing OS now.

My new Case (Christmas present:thumbsup:) has a one inch wire, with a connector on it and a round half inch plastic disk on the other end...
And the hard black plastic connector was labeled SPEAKER LOL...
Maybe new cases are getting away from actual speakers.... I would call this more of a buzzer LOL...

It does grunt and buzzzz on start ups....
