So what is the deal with Airsoft?

So far, the only thing I get is that the guns look real-er, are cheaper, and only shoot 30 feet or something.

I don't really get it. I'm not saying it's not cool. but why would someone do this versus paintball? Or paintball versus airsoft? Or maybe you're not supposed to shot an airsoft gun at someone else?

airsoft guns can go far more than 30 feet, some several hundred. Airsoft BB's are cheap and much cleaner than balls of paint. They hit hard enough to let you know that you've been hit, but not hard enough to leave the bruises that you get from paintballing.

I'd say both Airsoft and Paintball are fun.

Airsoft guns are more realistic, more accurate and can definitely shoot further than 30 feet. Airsfot ammo is extremely cheap which equals more shooting fun. Paintball is a different animal. The ammo is pretty expensive, but there's a slightly bigger following and fanbase I think, and therefore more people to play with. It's also really, really, clear when you get hit. The biggest difference between paintball and airsoft is the focus on realism. Airsoft is more about realism and role-playing, while paintball is all about shooting and less formal gameplay.

my friend had a gun that cost him somthing like $800. it was an upgraded sniper rifle that did something like 400fps?

Doesn't surprise me. My friend bought an expensive, real weight/feel airsoft M4 with a laser dot scope and some other upgrades and it cost him over $500. (I think the brand was Tokyo Marui)

I own a paintball marker and an airsoft rifle. Both are fun sports. But I would not be caught dead walking around with my M4 rifle on the street. Get you killed. Or if you own a airsoft blowback pistol. Both are popular in california.
