So what is it once you've changed out EVERYTHING and it still won't POST???????

Continued from a misplaced thread in OT..........

Push button, fans/lights come on but nothing happens. (no beeps, no video, monitor light even stays yellow so definitely not getting signal)

I've now officially changed...........

Mobo
PSU
RAM
CPU (yes, even the friggin' CPU)
and as a last ditch effort in case the blank screen was just a video thing............video card

And this sucker STILL won't POST!!!

WTF is going on????????? :|😕🙁:brokenheart:

Nope.

Did it at *his* house, my work and now my house too. :|

To top it off, I've now put in a 3rd mobo & STILL she won't post!!!!!!! AaaaAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!
!!

Have now gone back to PSU #1, RAM #1, CPU #1, video card #1 (all one at a time to keep things checkmarked as I go) and STILLLLLLLLLL............nuttin'!!!

W-------T-------F???????????????????????????????

Had originally tied off speaker wire, but hooked it up to listen for any beeps, but nothin'! Zip, zilch, nada!

The only things I've got hooked up now are RAM, CPU & video! That's it!

This is the most unusual thing I've ever experienced in computers EVARRRR! :|

make sure the mobo is lying on some non-conductive surface - that is, take it out of the case and put it on some cardboard or something. if the mobo is in touch with metal, it could be shorting out.

check how the power button is hooked up - if you don't plug those annoying little wires in correctly, it wouldn't actually be telling the mobo to boot.

make sure no USB hubs are hooked up, as they can cause shorts.

that's all i can think of for now as this is quite odd.

Ya, I kinda' thought about that stuff, but the power all the panel switch wires are correct othewise it wouldn't power up the lights, fans, cpu fan, video card fan, etc.

After I pulled the 1st mobo, I made sure not to hook up the usb headers anymore.

This case *does* have its own stamped risers in it so you don't use those brass risers and I suspected that at first, but then I thought.........."Wait a minute. This sucker ran just fine for over a year before this happened!!"

But aside from the above........if the mobo mounts are in contact with the stamped metal of the case, is that potential for grounding?? (I'd assume 'mounts only' are safe as that's how this case was designed *and* that's how it ran for over a year, but I'd definitely hear opinions).

???

Try starting it without the switch for the mobo, jump the pins for the PWR. See if that does it, perhaps it is a bad Momentary switch.

But if the switch were bad, wouldn't the other stuff not power up?? (like lights, fans, CPU fan, vid card fan, etc.)

To jump power, just a quick touch with a small instrument.

Just jump the 2 prongs with the tip of a screwdriver or something???

And once jumped, it will stay on???

Yes

Original.........

Sempron 2800
512mb pc3200 OCZ
ATI 7000 32mb
ECS N2U400A (Nforce2) mobo
Achieve (the classic) 500w PSU (24A on the +12V rail.....yeeehaww)

Replacement parts that are tried & true that I keep solely for testing........

Duron 1.6 (sleeper of all CPU's ever made)
512mb PC3200 Kingston
AIW7500
ECSK7VTA3

3rd mobo was the PCChips version of the same. (M811U, minus the 166fsb capability)

I'm a little calmer now since I put it out of my sight after my last post.......😛

Hmmmm............

Well, I jumpered the power switch header & it just did the same thing. Lights, fans, but no POST.

Brought another case w/ me to work. Case has a PSU in it, so I'm gonna try that one & see what happens in the event that I actually had 2 bad PSU's.

Then, lastly, I'm gonna pull everything out of the old case & put it in the new one & then I'll have eliminated everything for SURE! & if it still does it after that, I'm gonna tell the guy that I'm posessed and that no manner of me tinkering it will fix it until after an exorcism.........LOL!! 😛

OK, so here we go now....................

New CASE

New PSU

And STTTTTIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLl!!!!!!!!! No POST!!! (BTW, this case uses traditional brass standoffs, etc. so I know there's no mobo-grounding problem. I pull the video card & so just CPU/RAM and I jumper the power headers & not a single beep!!

WTF is going on here????????

Do I have 3 bad mobo's, 2 bad CPU's and 2 bad sticks of RAM???????

You've got to be F@#$^!@$#in' kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :|

i've fixed alot of computers and my best guess is its the motherboard or possibly cpu. usually if there is power but no logo on screen and no beeping, its the motherboard in most of the cases i've seen. it would beep if there is something wrong with memory or video card.

OK, now I'm down to this.......................

New case w/ new PSU (3rd PSU in this test)

3 different mobo's

speaker.......(and new case has its own little stub 'speaker' so I'm using that to even eliminate the old case's speaker connection)

NO CPU
NO RAM
NO VIDEO

JUST THE NEW CASE, NEW CPU AND 3 DIFFERENT MOBOS (2 of which I KNEW to be good before this whole thing started!)

Nothing!! Zip, Zilch, NADa......................NOTHING!!!! Not a single, solitary, little beep!!!

Am I losing my mind yet??? You bet!!!

All 3 mobo's are fried to the point that they won't even beep??? Not even a single F'ing BEEP???????????

Yes, I did on the mobo currently in the box.........

But perhaps you can edumucate me better than I've been used to. (Of course whenever I've even ACCIDENTALLY jumpered JP1, the CMOS has always reset, but perhaps now that I actually WANT it to, it'll probably be a 5 minute process, right??)

Jumpered JP1 to pins 2 & 3, turn on power for a minute. Shut down. Back to pins 1 & 2. Turn back on & I should hear some beeps............correct???

EDIT: Actually in the process right now of pulling CMOS battery *and* jumpering CMOS to "clear"............leaving for 5 minutes, then gonna try again!!

If that doesn't do it, I'm just gonna burn the building to the ground!

OK, next, latest update..................

Put CMOS battery back in, jumpered JP1 back to "normal" and nothing. So I thought to myself..........."Well, let's shine the "beeps" thing for a minute"..........and I put the CPU, RAM and Video card back in & guess what????????????/

Mother F!@#!^`er booted right up!!!! Still no beeps whatsoever, but booted up nonetheless.

Anybody care to explain THAT one???????

(Puttin' everything back in the old case & old PSU to see if it'll fire up now & if it does, I'm gonna wonder FOREVER, WTF it was!) :disgust::evil::|:thumbsdown:

Check that! One thing at a time.........I'm gonna swap PSU's first & see what happens!!!

Oooooh...........worry not...........that front speaker was hooked up 8 ways to Sunday & it won't beep for nothin'!!

Then again..........neither will the speaker in the other case either!! Maybe mobos don't BEEP anymore?????? (WTF?)

Well, I've also nailed it to the PSU!! And there's a possibility that the other PSU I was using (PSU #2) was bad 'cuz I think I recall something about that one, now that I think about it. (Probably should've chucked it so I wouldn't test with it).

Long story short..........I swapped original PSU into new case & she wouldn't boot. Put new cheezy PSU from new case *back* into new case & she booted again. So new PSU is good. Bad-ass 500W dual-fan PSU took a sh!t!!! (though still had power enough to run fans, lights, panels, etc. so as to lead me to believe it was fine........mother f!@%!@#!!!!!!!!!!) :| This PSU will be sacrificed tonight over an open flame in a field.....far, far away!!!!

But then my ultimate question is.............

WHY DID IT TAKE A CMOS RESET (and a goood looooong 10 minute reset w/ battery pull & all ta' boot) TO GET THE MOBO TO BOOT IN THE NEW CASE W/ NEW PSU?????

More than likely the BIOS wasn't autodetecting something correctly. I have run into a few cases of it being mainly the memory timings or FSB being detected wrong as to why boards sometimes won't boot initially. I have even run into a old Compaq once that wouldn't accept a rearrangement of its existing cards or an addition of a PCI NIC. If anything was changed it simply wouldn't boot, even using the clear CMOS+removal of battery for an extended time, but put everything back as it came from the factory and a CMOS clear and it would boot up every time.😕
