So what is going on in the rest of the world?

Almost every thread on here is bitching and moaning over Iraq, so I'm just wondering what else is going on in the world. I must admit that I don't really read the news sites and I go for weeks on end getting all of my news from AT 😱, but I think it would really make P&N more interesting if there were more posts about things other than Iraq. Occasionally there are some threads about China or Europe which I do find interesting, but other than that every single thread seems to be focused on the US and Iraq, and every one of those threads are basically the same thing with people bitching about this that and the other.

So.....is there a rest of the world? If so, does sh!t ever happen there?

huge elections in iran now

funny how someone intireviewed by the bbc today put it "the most democratic undemocratic elections in the middle east"

I'm tired of hearing about Islam and terrorist and Christians though. Surely something else is going on out there that is interesting? Afterall it is a bigass world.

More of the same ol', same ol'. Islamic militants chopping off heads and detonating bombs...in Africa.

Just can't get away from it...

Over here in Australia we just had a high level Chinese diplomat defect.

He has come out in the media and stated that he made aware the Australian government his knowledge of certain clandestine Chinese operations. He is a little frustrated at the moment, because it seems our government(which appears to be ignoring him) doesn't want to upset China. So this poor ah heck has his buttocks out in the breeze. He'll probably get knocked off by one of the Triad gangs now.

See, now that is interesting. Any links about it?

A hurling competition? (not the throwing up "hurling") You know? Like shuffleboard on ice?

Just the same old stuff:

Support grows for the upcoming genocide in Europe.
France being pressured to pursue their Rwandan genocide guests.
Refugees being tortured.
Far-right supremacist political parties reigning over everyone.
etc.

Long-delayed reopening of a World War I cemetery in Ukraine further promotes Polish-Ukrainian reconsiliation.

Rebels approaching the capital city of Nepal degraded living conditions of the civil population. Monarchy and Maoists far from ceasefire.

Government-ordered destructions of townships in Zimbabwe rend 1-3 Mil. homeless. African Union seems incapable to intervene.

Former King and two times democratically elected president of Bulgaria gets deselected. Winning Socialists face difficult coalition building in relatively heterogenous election outcome. The deselected government organized a lottery to encourage the people to go voting.

Refugees who left Uzbekistan after the Andischan massacre are sent back by Khirgyzstan. Uzbekistan to face moderate if any international reactions for the massacre.

- Another heir to the throne is born in the Netherlands

- Nigeria want higher oil production

- Medical costs due to obesitas increased tenfold in the USA between 1987-2002

- Couple killed by Grizzly (Alaska)

- Billy Graham says "goodbye"

- China to spend 40 billion dollars on infrastructure Peking

- Gay-pride allowed in Jeruzalem

etc.

etc.

On Friday our chancellor (G.Schröder) will ask if he still holds the majority - which he will be denied (if all goes right) Then they will go to the president (who except for duties such as this is mostly in representative functions) who if everything goes right will dismiss Schröder and/or the parliament and we will have elections by Sep2005. Our constitution does not make it easy to have (re)elections when they are not due. If everything goes wrong, Schröder will stay chancellor until the (regular) elections in Sep2006 or even worse some other leftist idiot (prolly Müntefering) will become chancellor and Germany will slide further into recession.
Either way, they will get the mighty boot if not this year, latest in 2006

Yeah. But I wish that the (non-leftist) opposition concretizises their reform plans before the election date this time. However it's still possible that the president will prevent reelections because this part of the constitution wasn't meant as a comfy exit-and-restart-option for failing chancelors. It's going to be a hot weekend in Germany 😉
