When I was little, all the other guys would say "don't touch girls -- they have cooties". Of course, we all know that most guys even when they are very young, actually liked girls. I know that even when I was as young as 5 years old I noticed and was attracted to girls.

But I digress. What I want to know is: What exactly were cooties? Was it referring to mono? Or something else?

body lice

Edit: a form of body lice to be just a tad more specific. Not all lice are called "cooties"

Cooties as used today means something that girls usually have and that boys will get if you touch them. This is obviously some socio-psychological phenomena.

The term Cooties as used 3 or more generations ago was slang and meant head-lice.

Body lice, like everyone else has said... yeah, I always liked girls, too. Only in the last few months have they really liked me, though.
