Hero runs Sense UI as well, a graphical overlay that runs on top of Android. I love it, but it really does need a faster phone to keep up.

The Nexus One has faster/better hardware, newer version of android, and omg such a pretty screen.

Oh and BTW on the Hero/Eris you can disable sense UI, and just run raw android if you want. Download HomeSwitcher from the market, and set Home as the default, instead of Sense.

Don't even need home switcher. Go to Settings, Applications. Find Sense UI and tap on it. Tap on Clear Defaults. Then tap on home. It will ask what program to open Home with, Home, or Sense UI. Choose Home and select make this default.

Oh, and the Hero/Droid Eris will get Android 2.1 when it comes out. Supposedly 2.0/2.1 is optimized to run faster.

Sense UI is a little graphical heavy. If they put it on the Nexus One (and I hope they will put it on the Bravo which is a Nexus One but HTC's flavor), it will run spectacular. See TouchFLO 3D on the Touch HD2? Expect that kinda caliber.
