Pikes Peak is awesome. Next year I am going to be living pretty close and plan to go there often.

How did you get up?

Most people just drive up to Pikes.

Red Cone is a much more fun drive, though not as high. Yes, I've driven on those switchbacks you can see in the background.

The lazy can look to Mt. Evans instead. :p

edit: I didn't know you can just drive up Pike's Peak too. I thought some hiking was involved.

Didn't take any pics on the drive up, but those Switchbacks past Glen Cove can be quite ... steep

I should mention that coming off of Red Cone, the only way is downhill, it's steep, and there is loose rock so you literally cannot brake or you might slide off. You have to start slow and ride it down until it levels out a bit. The road on Pike's I imagine is more maintained ;)

Yep... Tried driving it last year, but the road past 10,000 feet was closed, too much snow.

This year, looks like they paved alot of it to the top.

I expect to see some broken records on the Hill Climb soon.

Not really. There's a small walk before you're technically on the peak, but even the oldest of old people can make it. It's pretty much the first 14er anybody ever climbs in colorado.

Even if you do hike it, it's up and back in 8 to 10 hours. Not a bad day hike.

Kinda hazy today. The fire in Teller county's still choking the air.

Yup.

One of the cashiers in the gift shop said the Arizona fires pretty much had the area looking "foggy" all last week..

It's kinda cleared a bit.

I've been to the top as well, a long time ago. Early 80's when I was 8 or so. Four of us drove up in the ol' Plymouth Horizon. An absolutely terrifying drive, but amazing once we got to the top. I wasn't prepared for how difficult it was to breathe, but I adjusted. Need to go back.

I get to look out from 13,500 feet every weekend as I sit in the door of the jump plane. The best part is saying fuck it and jumping out :)

It's a great view. I hiked it back in 2004 - lots of fun. Aggressive marmots near the top!

Oh geez. I was going to say that if you've been hiking down for 4 hours, your knees are probably feeling like they're ready to explode. I've never minding hiking up steep mountains. Hiking down sucks.

I was talking with some dude who had a camelback on, and a bike... he said it take 6-8 hours to hike from Manitou Springs, to the Summit, via Barr Trail

Wait, wut? you live in Denver and you didn't know you could drive up? I did in '74!!! (can you say vapor lock?). Next you'll tell us you didn't know that there are young horny college girls in Boulder.
