So what could be my XBox Live trouble?

I realize that this may be difficult to answer, but I'm hoping someone has a recommendation.

After spending about 3 hours of unsuccessfully trying to connect XBox Live last night, I threw in the towel.

I get the green light on "Cables Connected", but it craps out on me when trying to connect to my ISP. According to my ISP I have to include my username and password (PPPOE settings), which I did. I also changed the DNS servers from automatic to manual and typed in the primary and alternate DNS addresses. I had one rep tell me those were needed, and another who said it's not necessary  Either way, I'm not able to authenticate. And of course, my ISP can not provide me with any other help than the DNS server addresses and my PPPOE settings.

One thing that I did notice is that when I'm hooked up my LAN 100 light on my Zytel modem blinks rapidly in a consistent rythm. When my computer is hooked up (not using a router yet, so I have to switch cables) the LAN 100 light stays a constant bright orange. I am using a crossover cable and all other lights are lit as they should be, so I'm not sure why the light blinks rapidly when the XBox is connected.

So where should I go from here? Is the issue initial authentication? Meaning, if I set up my SMC Barricade router and got authentication with my computer, would I automatically get it with the XBox (due to internet sharing that the router creates)? Or is there something else?

Are you using a router? Some routers either don't work with XBL or need to be reconfigured in order to work properly. There is a page at xboxlive.com that shows which routers dont work.

Have you tried directly connecting it to the modem just to take the router out of the equation? Also, have you tried a normal ethernet cable? I don't use a crossover for mine and it works fine.

I have not plugged into the router yet, I was only plugging directly into the modem. I WAS though using a crossover cable, as it is required with my computer. Is that most likely the problem? I am getting "Cables Connected" message, though.

I'm sure you'll get a cable connected message. I think the Xbox just checks to see if their is something connected to the back of the box. If you have a regular cable lying around I'd try that out just to see. Hell, it might not work but at least you'll have one more thing marked off the potential culprit list.

Sorry about the above formatting but according to their website if your SMC 7004VBR is using firmware 1.03 or 1.20 you need to flash it to the most recent firmware release.

I have the SMC 7004ABR, but again, haven't used it. I have only tried to connect straight with my Zytel modem. I will keep this in mind when I try to hook it up, possibly tonight.
